Rovers and Souths to decide FFNC title
Rovers and Souths to decide FFNC title

16 September 2022, 8:33 PM

South Lismore and Richmond Rovers will fight out the Men's Premier League Grand Final on Saturday in East Lismore. Both sides came through nailbiting Semi Final wins after Souths defeated Alstonville and Rovers eliminated Byron Bay in similar fashion last Sunday. Both matches were decided on penalties after the sides could not be separated after normal time and extra time.Rovers and Souths are familiar with each other games after playing twice in the last month, with Rovers taking a 3-0 win and then Souths closing the gap for a 1-1 draw in the last round of the regular competition. These results will mean nothing on Saturday afternoon.Souths will look to the experience of Murray Towner and Patrick Kable and the consistent goal scoring ability of Ezra Frost up front. Rovers strong backline, which includes Shayne Smith, Mitch Holland and Ben Morgan, will look to repel any Celtic challenges to release the attacking speed of Jono See and Ethan Allen. Both sides possess exceptional goalkeepers at the back with Rovers Chris Jones and Souths Luke Condon having exceptional seasons. The large crowd which is expected will be in for a excellent match to decide the 2022 FFNC Men's Premier League title. The match will kick off at 4:00pm at Bill Harris Field in East Lismore. The Women's Premier League Grand Final will see Alstonville FC take on Goonellabah FC at Crawford Park, Alstonville, with kick off at 2:30pm on Sunday. The Men's Championship League Grand Final will be played on Saturday at 12:30pm at Bangalow between the Bluedogs and Byron Bay FC.

The Lismore Women's 10's Rugby Union team will create history on Saturday. The team will be the first women's team from the club to make a Grand Final and will take to the field with the belief that they can do one better and bring home the trophy. The side has had a number of changes throughout the season, mainly through injury, but the team has been able to keep a similar look over the finals series.A 17-0 Major Semi Final loss to Casuarina will be motivation for the Lismore side, who will be out to exact revenge and bring a premiership back to Lismore after a very tough year. The club trained for a number of weeks in a carpark in the CBD after the February/March floods destroyed the clubs grounds and clubhouse.Coach John Lisetto will look to Jada Williams, Sabrina Lisetto and Lily Patston to add the spark and experience to the side on Saturday. In the First Grade Grand Final, Bangalow will take on Wollongbar/Alstonville in a rematch of the Major Semi Final that saw Bangalow scrape through with a 30-29 victory. The match will be a close encounter again after Wollongbar accounted for Lennox Head last week 30-14.FAR NORTH COAST RUGBY UNIONGrand Final Team Lists 17th Photo: Steve MackneySouth Lismore and Alstonville were locked at 1-1 after normal time with Murray Towner scoring for Souths and Joel Perkins for Villa. The sides could not be separated after extra time and penalties were needed to determine a winner. Both sides took eight shots each in a nail biting finale but it was the Celtics who eventually prevailed 6-5 to progress to the Grand Final. In the other emotion charged semi final, Richmond Rovers and Byron Bay could not be separated after normal time, with Jono See scoring the lone goal from a free kick for the home side in the 1-1 scoreline. In similar circumstances to the other semi final, neither side could take an advantage in extra time and the match was decided on penalties.Rovers took the penalty shootout 4-2, with Rovers goalkeeper Chris Jones becoming the hero in East Lismore. The Lismore Women's 10's Rugby Team is into the FNC Rugby Union Grand Final after a spirited victory over Ballina on Saturday. The John Lisetto coached side were ready to fire after a disappointing loss to Casuarina in the Major Semi Final two weeks ago. They will now have a chance to redeem themselves after a 27-12 win in Ballina.Lismore opened the scoring after just two minutes with a try before Ballina hit back with a converted try to lead 7-5.Five minutes later Lismore's Lara de Jong crossed to wrestle the lead back going into halftime 10-7.Just two minutes into the second half, Ballina scored under the posts for another lead change 12-10.It was all Lismore from this point on with Sabrina Lisetto being rewarded with a try after several strong runs form the Green's forwards. The try was converted by Jada Williams.Four minutes later, Kiara Jeffery crossed to push the Lismore lead out to 22-12.Lisetto managed to cross from the back of a ruck on the stroke of fulltime to seal the victory 27-12 and progress to the Grand Final next Saturday.Unfortunately the Lismore Colts could not make it two from two Preliminary Final victories after going down in a nailbiter to Casuarina 22-16.Casuarina got out to an early 8-0 lead before Lismore hit back with a try to Jack Taylor after a scrum penalty and another to Austin Ruane on the halftime siren, to lead 10-8 at the break.Immediately after the break, Taylor converted a penalty to push the score out to 13-8.Just three minutes later, Casuarina scored under the posts, which they converted for another lead change at 15-13.With ten minutes left in the match, Taylor slotted another penalty goal to retake the lead 16-15.Casuarina then scored a converted try with just minutes left on the clock, but Lismore were unable to wrestle the lead back to go down 22-16.FAR NORTH COAST RUGBY UNION                                      Preliminary Final Results 10th September 2022  First GradeWollongbar Alstonville 30(James Vidler, Blake Henderson, Bodi Smith, Matthew Scott tries, Sam Kerry 2 conversions, penalty goal, Bodi Smith penalty goal) d Lennox Head 14(Jared Lofts, Jedd Windle tries, Jared Lofts 2 conversions)Half Time: Wollongbar 8 - Lennox 7Women's 10'sLismore 27(Lara de Jong 2, Sabrina Lisetto 2, Kiara Jeffery tries, Jada Williams conversion) d Ballina 12(Jadha King, Illarrah Roberts tries, Jadha King conversion)Half Time: Lismore 10 - Ballina 7 2nd GradeRichmond Range 20(Penalty try, Luke Benn tries, James Pankhurst conversion, 2 penalty goals) d Casuarina Beach 18(Oscar Sims, Nathan Turpin tries, Harrison Hall conversion, penalty goal, Jared de Thierry penalty goal)Half Time: Range 10 - Casuarina 8 Colts Under 18'sCasuarina Beach 22(Oscar Bailey 2, Mason Duke tries, Jacob Beck 2 conversions, penalty goal) d Lismore 16(Jack Taylor, Austin Ruane tries, Jack Taylor 2 penalty goals)Half Time: Lismore 10 - Casuarina 8 Presidents CupYamba 17(Nathan Hollis, Adrian Miller tries, Nathan Hollis 2 conversions, penalty goal) d Mullumbimby 12(Judd Batson, Charles Clapp tries, Mitch Lambert conversion)Half Time: Yamba 10 - Mullumbimby 7 Far North Coast Grand Final Matches 17th September at Kingsford Smith Park, Ballina10:00 am - Presidents Cup - Wollongbar Alstonville v Yamba11:40 am - Colts Under 18's - Lennox Head v Casuarina Beach1:10pm - 2nd Grade - Ballina v Richmond Range2:50pm - Women's 10's - Casuarina Beach v Lismore3:45pm - 1st Grade - Bangalow v Wollongbar Alstonville

Rovers take Premier League Pointscore Title
Rovers take Premier League Pointscore Title

07 September 2022, 8:26 PM

Richmond Rovers have taken out the FFNC Men's Premier League Pointscore Title after a 1-1 draw with South Lismore on Wednesday night in East Lismore. The title is the 12th time Rovers have earned the trophy in the clubs history.South Lismore started strongly, dictating territory and possession in the first 25 minutes of the match. The Celtics structure had the Rovers defence scrabbling at times, with the home side managing to repel the several strong attacking raids.Rovers began to wrestle back the momentum and at the 28 minute mark of the first half, Shane Smith hit an unmarked shot from the right hand side after a short pass from Jono See, for Rovers to take the lead 1-0.Seven minutes later, a 35m shot from Rovers defender Joel Hardwick hit the cross bar, narrowly denying the home side a 2-0 lead. The second half started in bizarre circumstances, with a Jono See shot in the first minute being deflected by the Celtics defence before the ground was covered in darkness after the lights went out just two minutes into the second stanza. There was a fifteen minute delay while the lights cooled and then warmed back up ready for action. The match was then a midfield battle, with both sides testing each other until with just five minutes to go, Celtics Ezra Frost knocked in a goal from close range to tie the match up at 1-1.It sparked the visitors into a last minute scramble to grab the win and deny Rovers the title but a draw at fulltime was enough.Oli O’Reilly was strong in the midfield for Rovers and Ethan Allen's speed caused the Celtics defence trouble at times.South Lismore will take plenty of positives out of the draw after going down 3-0 last week to the same side. Coach Rick Austen will look to pick his players up for their next clash after a spirited outing on Wednesday night.Rovers will now take on Byron Bay in a Semi Final on Sunday at 2:30pm in East Lismore and Souths will travel to Alstonville in the other Semi Final on Sunday, also at 2:30pm.Rovers Captain Chris Jones is expected back for the Semi Final after sitting out the match through injury.
