Cricket returns with T/20 competition

06 October 2022, 10:26 PM

Summer is just around the corner when cricket returns to Lismore and the Far North Coast this weekend.A massive weekend of T/20 action is planned for the Hooker League clubs, with four rounds of the competition to be played across Saturday and Sunday.Goonellabah Workers Sports and Marist Brothers commence the season at 9am on Saturday at Oakes Oval with both sides looking to gain an early advantage in the short form of the game. Both sides will not be at full strength or fitness after just a few weeks in the nets after the winter sports season concluded.A number of players will be underdone, with no baseball throughout winter to hold general skill and fitness for many.Marist Brothers will then clash with the Casino RSM Cavaliers at 12:15pm before Goonellabah Workers Sports takes on the Cavaliers at 3:30pm.On Sunday, both sides travel to Murwillumbah with Brothers taking on Murwillumbah and Goonellabah Workers Sports taking on Lennox Head at 10am before backing up for the fourth match of the weekend at 1:30pm when GWS take on Murwillumbah and Brothers take on Lennox Head.Lismore District Cricket also commences on Saturday with First Grade matches between Marist Brothers and Casino and Lismore Workers taking on Norths. Second Grade matches will be played between Evans Head and Marist Brothers and Casino and Lismore Workers. With solid numbers, eight sides will clash in Third Grade and six teams will make up Fourth Grade for the 2022/2023 season.Saturday 8 OctoberHooker League T/20 Round 19:00amGoonellabah Workers Sports v Marist Brothers at Oakes Oval12:15pmTintenbar East Ballina v Alstonville at Kingsford Smith SouthBallina Bears v Lennox Head at Fripp OvalPottsville v Tweed Banora Colts at Les Cave Oval12:30pmCudgen v Murwillumbah at Rabjones OvalRound 212:15pmMarist Brothers v Casino RSM Cavaliers at Oakes Oval3:30pmTweed Banora Colts v Cudgen at Les Cave OvalTintenbar East Ballina v Lennox Head at Kingsford Smith SouthBallina Bears v Alstonville at Fripp OvalGoonellabah Workers Sports v Casino RSM Cavaliers at Oakes OvalMurwillumbah v Pottsville at Rabjones OvalSunday 9 OctoberRound 39:00amPottsville v Cudgen at Seabreeze Oval10:00amBallina Bears v Casino RSM Cavaliers at Fripp OvalTintenbar East Ballina v Tweed Banora Colts at Kingsford Smith SouthGoonellabah Workers Sports v Lennox Head at Rabjones OvalMurwillumbah v Marist Brothers at Les Cave OvalRound 412:15pmCudgen v Alstonville at Seabreeze Oval1:30pmTintenbar East Ballina v Casino RSM Cavaliers at Kingsford Smith SouthMurwillumbah v Goonellabah Workers Sports at Rabjones OvalBallina Bears v Tweed Banora Colts at Fripp OvalMarist Brothers v Lennox Head at Les Cave Oval3:30pmPottsville v Alstonville at Seabreeze Oval

O'Sullivan selected for NSW
O'Sullivan selected for NSW

03 October 2022, 11:05 PM

With Far North Coast Softball returning to the diamonds next Saturday after their season being cut short earlier this year, it’s been Lachlan O’Sullivan who has been flying the flag for the local Association.15-year-old O'Sullivan, after years of training and travelling back and forth to Sydney, has finally reaped the benefits after being named in the SNSW Under 16 State Boys team.O'Sullivan, a member of the Rous Hotel Softball Club, has been playing the sport for a number of years.Coming from a Baseball background and with a last name synonymous in the Baseball community, Lachlan starting playing softball with his mother Aurora as a ten year old in the young Rous Rascals side. From here, he developed a love for the sport and was quickly identified as a talent to watch.Known for his quickness around the bases, consistent batting and fielding skills - especially in the outfield, it was due to his own dedication that he made the development squad last year.Although disappointed when he didn't make the team, he continued to train hard and with the help of local coach Karina Connors in between training camps in Sydney, saw O'Sullivan advance to the next level and a spot in the State team.FNC Softball is still taking registrations with a Come & Try day being held the first two Saturdays. FNC takes out Country Championship
FNC takes out Country Championship

03 October 2022, 9:20 PM

The FNC U/16 Baseball team has taken out the NSW U/16 Country Baseball Championships in Coffs Harbour over the long weekend. The team trained in cricket nets, on tennis courts and at touch football fields. For ten months, Clint McCarthy the head coach of FNC U/16s has had a plan - to be ready for the Country Championships. The boys despite their home field, Albert Park, still largely being a construction zone arrived in Coffs Harbour ready to play. The boys missed a complete winter season, they played four scrimmage games on the Gold Coast in the lead up to the event. So the players were keen to play on Saturday morning. But of course, the first day was rain delayed. The team was grateful to be able to play their first game late Saturday afternoon and came away with a 7-0 win. Senior players Hamish Weekes, and Riley Cooper dominated with the bat. Hamish hitting two singles, a double and a triple. Riley two singles and a double. Singles from Lachlan O’Sullivan, Nate Boxsell and a single from rookie Kieran Weekes. Catcher Sam Davis was solid behind the plate, making a play at second from the back net, and supported his pitchers Hamish, Lachlan and rookie Dash Fagan who were ultimately too strong for the new development Coffs Squad.Hamish Weekes fires a pitch in the NSW Country Championships. Photo: Al ConnorsThe second game on Sunday against Central Coast was a 16-4 win. Again, Weekes led with the bat hitting a single, two doubles and a triple. O’Sullivan also had a single and two doubles and between the two they four RBI’s a piece. Sam Cottee, only having played season of baseball took one for the team Hit by Pitched Ball and scoring twice.Alex Poole pitched a first innings that was one ball off an immaculate innings, he threw 9 strikes and 1 ball striking out the Central Coast first three batters. Kieran Weekes younger brother of Hamish and assistant Coach Liam Weekes didn’t have to move his glove much catching to Poole.Connor McCarthy the youngest player on the team at only 13 years, held his own for the tournament pitching in relief throwing, with no walks against Central Coast and also getting a hit. Matt Keys, also having two hits in the game.Nate Boxsell avoids a high ball. Photo: Al ConnorsErrors were costly for Central Coast and FNC took full advantage. Joe Parsons had two hits and three RBI’s. Harry Morgan Spooner, also had a hit.Monday morning saw both undefeated teams play each other with Far North Coast and Newcastle clashing, but FNC struggled to make contact with only two hits by O'Sullivan and Poole. FNC made mistakes base running, being struck out looking, wild throws in the field and not calling for fly balls in the outfield. They were simply outplayed by Newcastle’s pitching. The final at 1pm against the undefeated Newcastle was the fairytale FNC were looking for. FNC batted first, with ten runs home in the first innings. The FNC pitching was too strong for Newcastle, with FNC running out 17-0 winners. The young men have learned resilience through natural disaster, they have learnt to appreciate baseball more for having not played it. Their win has taught them the rewards of hard work.Congratulations to Head Coach Clint McCarthy, Paul Boxsell, Liam Weekes and Aurora O’Sullivan on the win. And to the FNC U/16’s team who most certainly deserve the title of NSW Country Champions. (Contributor: Amie Weekes)

The Lismore Cup is set to jump
The Lismore Cup is set to jump

21 September 2022, 8:51 PM

The 2022 edition of the M & T Tyres Lismore Cup has added bonuses.Several months ago, Racing NSW added the Lismore Cup to the list of qualifying races for The Big Dance, a race worth $2m to be run on Melbourne Cup Day at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. The race will be run over 1600m and the final field will be drawn from the winners and runners-up of 25 Country Cups across NSW.This opportunity has attracted a strong Cup field with trainers including Matt Dunn, Kris Lees, Chris Munce and Jack Bruce all having runners in this years race. The early favourite for the Cup is the Matt Dunn trained Stuck With You, who comes off a last start second at Doomben. The local interest will come from Lismore trainer Daniel Bowen who has 8-year-old gelding Holbrook entered and will be ridden by local jockey Noriyuki Masuda. The day will commence with the time-honoured Rousillon Handicap at 12:50pm with the other highlight race being Race 6, the Untamed Sprint over 1210m.After just 9mm of rain at the track overnight, the track is ready for racing on a Soft 5 and will give punters a true shot at backing a winner. The day will be run under overcast skies but this will not deter the thousands of patrons flocking to the track to finally enjoy an opportunity to dress up and celebrate after a tough 2022.Whether it is studying the form, names that jump out at you, the jockeys colours or a favourite number, there is a winner in every race, the difficult part is picking which one.
