Cycling is hitting new heights on the Far North Coast, with plenty of interest leading into big event in Lismore.Planning is well underway for the Lismore Cycling Festival, which will be held over the October Long Weekend. The event will be a joint effort between the Lismore City Council and the Byron Bay Cycle Club and is looking to grow after a very successful 2023 event.Byron Bay Cycle Club, which has many members across Lismore, Alstonville and Casino, as well as the Byron and Ballina shires, finally kicked off cycle racing for 2024 recently. The Cycle Club holds regular weekend events which is a great introduction to the sport and also a way to start some training prior to the Lismore event in October.One such event was held last weekend with plenty of excitement in the junior ranks.There was a strong turnout of girls and boys of all ages ranging from 5yrs through to 15yrs and they rode for fun and some prize money. They arrived with any bike they could ride and there was a strong mix of road bikes, mountain bikes and a BMX. The 12 junior members enjoyed the Byron Bay Cavanbah Centre closed circuit track and took off in either a 10min or 15min race format depending on age and ability. Guided by qualified club assistant coaches, and some keen parents joining, the 10min race was hotly contested and approximately 3 kms later (3 laps) the pack sprinted to the line where Brody Hogan, Nash Ryan and Malu Kelly claimed the podium spots in that order. The 15min race was a nail biter and finished in a similar fashion. This race was at approximately 4kms (4 laps) with Imogen Matthews claiming 3rd spot as well as the fastest female junior, whilst Kobi Hogan grabbed the top spot, like his brother, and Elijah Punch was second. Everyone had so much fun and didn’t go away empty handed as participants received a goodies pack to take home and refuel for next time. There are 2 further opportunities to be involved this winter at the BBCC Juniors events being Sunday 28th July and Sunday 25th August. It is a great way for all juniors to hone their skills for the upcoming Lismore Cycling Festival of 5-6 October.   The club is asking the Juniors and parents to challenge some mates and spread the word to school friends to allow everyone to get involved. The Marist Brothers Rams will be looking for a win to stay in touch with the top teams in the NRRRL competition.The Rams will head north on Sunday to play the Murwillumbah Colts at the Colts JRL Fields.A win will keep the side in touch with the ladder leaders, heading toward the NRRRL Finals Brothers currently sit in 6th position, just one point ahead of Murwillumbah, who are in 8th place.After a big win against Byron Bay two weeks ago, the Rams went down to Evans Head last Saturday, 25-18 at Crozier Field.Centre Mitchell Krause continues to trouble opposition defences, and is sitting second on the season try scoring ladder with 12.Half Shallin Fuller has also been in strong form in recent weeks.Ladies League Tag will start the day at 10:50am, with the Ramettes sitting in second position after 5 wins from their first 6 matches of the year.The U/18's will start at 12:00pm, followed by Reserve Grade at 1:15pm, with the Rams sitting in 5th and the Colts in 6th.First Grade will kick off at 2:45pm on Sunday.Northern United will have a bye in First Grade, with several lower grades playing the Tweed Heads Seagulls at Crozier Field in Lismore on Sunday.

The Marist Brothers Rams have gone down in a nail biter to the Evans Head Bombers.The Rams hosted a club day with juniors starting matches at 9am, as well as a joint Old Boys Day with the Bombers at Oakes Oval and Crozier Field.The Bombers scored first to take an early lead before Rams centre Henry Lee crossed in the 13th minute.Half Shallin Fuller scored at the 25 minute mark and it was then a battle up until halftime, with Brothers leading 8-4 at the main break.Fuller then showed a piece of individual brilliance to set Charles Kumbi up for the sides third try and a lead of 14-4.Momentum swung back to Evans Head, with three quick tries to lead 22-14 with 25 minutes to go.The Rams saw a glimpse of hope when a Bombers player was sent from the field for dissent with 20 minutes to go in the match.Will Hawkins then scored for the Rams to narrow the margin to 22-18.The big crowd was in for a close finish before the Bombers slotted a penalty goal and veteran half Roy Bell put the match out of reach for the Rams with a late field goal to see the final score finish 25-18.The Rams Reserve Grade side had a comprehensive 54-12 win.

Northern United will travel north looking for a much needed win on Sunday.The Dirawongs will take on the Tweed Coast Raiders at Les Burger Field at Cabarita and will be looking to reverse recent losses to Cudgen and Mullumbimby.The First Grade side has dropped to 7th spot on the ladder and will look for a solid effort against the Raiders, who sit 11th on the NRRRL ladder.Fullback Hezekiah McKenzie has continued his good form, scoring a double against the Giants, to take his tally to 10 tries for the season, third in the competition.McKenzie leads the NRRRL point scoring, with 102 points, 42 in front of second place.The Dirawongs have missed the organisation and experience of Tyrone Roberts and James Roberts in recent weeks, with both hopefully returning this week.Forward Djaan Jarrett celebrated a 100 game milestone last week and front rowers Clinton Williams, Anthony Thompson and hooker Jamahl Roberts will look to lead from the front against Tweed.The day will kick off at 12:00pm with U/18's, followed by Reserve Grade at 1:15pm and First Grade at 2:45pm.

Matches continue for all age groups at Oakes Oval and Crozier Field, culminating in the U/16's at 12:40pm prior to the seniors.The Reserve Grade match will kick off at 2:00pm, with First Grade slightly later than normal at 3:30pm. The Rams are coming off their biggest win of the season over the previously undefeated Byron Bay Red Devils 24-16.The Bombers defeated Casino 44-12 last week.Only one point separates the two sides on the ladder, with Evans Head in 5th and the Rams in 6th position with 11 points.The battle of the halves will be one to watch with Shallin Fuller in good form for the Rams, up against veteran Roy Bell.The spice in the forwards will be worth the price of admission, with the ex-Rams duo Lachlan and Aidan Kennedy pulling on the Bombers jersey against their former club.Rams forwards Lochlen Perrin and James Durheim have been in excellent form and will be up for the challenge.The day is also a dual Old Boys Day for both clubs, with several ex-players being involved in both clubs over the years.And on what is a massive day for the club, an important fundraising program is in place on Saturday for a very special cause.A Wish for Willow, supporting the Roberts Family is a very important fundraiser for the club.The Junior Club released the following statement for the community to get involved with."It is safe to say that everyone in our club knows the Roberts family, Bella is our Under 6's coach and play's under 17's whilst Cooper plays in our U16's team, both of them have been MBJRL club members for many years.Their beautiful 7 year old sister Willow has been diagnosed with Telangiectatic Osteosarcoma, a rare, malignant, high-grade osteosarcoma Cancer.Willow is now facing extensive surgeries, chemotherapy and rehabilitation. As you can only imagine, the impact that months of treatment based interstate will have on the family will significantly affect parents Damien and Martika's ability to work, and support their family needs financially.During winter Marist Brothers JRL will donate all profits from beanies purchased from the club to the Roberts family Go Fund Me cause. Northern United will celebrate a huge milestone for one of their players and the club on Sunday.Djaan Jarrett will play his 100th game for the club on Sunday at Crozier Field against the Mullumbimby Giants.The club released a statement congratulating Jarrett on the milestone and celebrating the major contribution he has made to the club over 10 years."Northern United RLFC wishes to congratulate Djaan Jarrett on playing his 100th first grade game for the Dirawongs this Sunday 16th June 2024 against Mullumbimby Giants at Crozier Oval.Djaan will be the first player to reach 100 first grade games for our club in the NRRRL competition.Djaan has been a player at Northern United RLFC since 2014 after returning home from the Mid North Coast.He has contributed as a player to our club by playing prop, back row and lock over the years. Djaan is also known for his defence and skills.Many people who know Djaan also know he is deaf and wears speech processors for his cochlear implants. Djaan does not play with speech processors which also highlights his awareness during games which is an amazing skill.He is greatly respected by members of our community as a family man and an active member of our club. He is also recognised for his contribution off the field where he has coached first grade, ladies league tag and women’s tackle at our club.He has also been president of our club and contributed to strengthening our clubs operations and governance. We are proud to have a man of his character associated with our club. Lismore Rugby Club will host the Byron Shire Rebels on Saturday in Round 7 of Far North Coast Rugby.After a break for the NSW Country Championships, the competition resumes with the Lismore side feeding a relatively unchanged lineup this weekend.Andrew Jordan comes into the side in the second row and is the only major change, after coach Angus MacDougall has settled on a regular side.The Rebels currently sit in second spot on the ladder behind leaders Ballina, and it will be a tough task for the home side but improved defensive efforts in recent weeks have shown the Greens can match it for periods with the top sides, they just need to put a full 80 minute performance together.The day will kick off with Reserve Grade at 1:00pm, the Women take to the field at 2:20pm, in what should be a close encounter and First Grade will start at the regular time of 3:15pm.In the match of the round, Richmond Range will host Evans River in what should be an entertaining match. Northern United have fallen short in their Round 3 catch up match against Cudgen on Saturday at Crozier Field.The Dirawongs were short on firepower for the clash and the Hornets dominated.The June Long Weekend holiday effected the United lineup, missing a number of stars including Tyrone Roberts and James Roberts.Fullback Hezekiah McKenzie scored the lone try for the home side in the 44-4 defeat.The loss drops the First Grade team to 7th on the ladder with 4 wins and 3 losses for the season.There were positives for the club, with strong wins for Reserve Grade and U/18's on the day.The U/18's had a 44-8 victory, which included doubles to fullback Tyrel Kelly and five eighth Jakequan Roberts Welsh.Kelly finished with 16 points for the match after adding 4 conversions.Reserve Grade had a 36-22 win over the Hornets with centre Edward Avery adding a double.

Huge numbers have attended the first SAP Gala Day at Hepburn Park last weekend.Over 300 participants enjoyed a sunny day in Goonellabah as Thistles hosted the first SAP Gala Day for 2024.SAP stands for Skills Acquisition Phase and is a program that improves individual skills and team based play at a young age.Wet weather has not only hampered the program but also football across all competitions, so to have sunshine and a huge amount of players was a huge plus for organisers.Ten fields were set up for the 300+ players from 10 Football Far North Coast Clubs.The program is tailored to the 9, 10 and 11 years age groups and gives the talented players a chance to challenge themselves and each other across the day and multiple games.FFNC General Manager Steve Mackney was on hand to present Awards to the best players in each age group, with plenty of smiles on both players and parents faces, with some teams only having played 1-2 matches this season due to the continuing wet weather and damp grounds.

The Northern United Dirawongs will play a catch up game against the Cudgen Hornets on Saturday.The match will be played at Crozier Field and is a Round 3 match that was postponed earlier in the year due to the ongoing wet.Coach Chris Binge has been able to name a strong side to take on the Hornets who will be out turn around a narrow 18-14 loss to Marist Brothers last weekend.The Dirawongs are coming of an impressive 30-12 victory over the Ballina Seagulls last Saturday and currently sit in 4th position on the NRRRL Ladder.The addition of Tyrone Roberts in the halves and James Roberts in the outside backs has strengthened a side that went deep into the finals last season.Both players have demonstrated their NRL skill and experience for United in the opening rounds of the season.Fullback Hezekiah McKenzie continues his good form with United and the side will look to add more competition points to a solid start to the season.The Dirawongs forward pack, led by Jirra Breckenridge and Djaan Jarrett have paved the way for the slick backline this season.Jamahl Roberts and dummy half has also been effective moving the squad around the park.Under 18's will start at 12:00pm, Reserve Grade at 1:15pm and First Grade at 2:45pm.

The Marist Brothers Rams have had a courageous victory over the Cudgen Hornets on Sunday.The match started well for the Rams, with Henry Lee scoring in the first set of the match after a Cudgen error.A try to Mitchell Krause saw Brothers race to a 10-0 lead after just 13 minutes before prop James Durheim was sent off in the 18th minute for striking.Down to 12 men for the rest of the match, the Rams dug deep and some sharp individual work by half Shallin Fuller had the Rams up 14-0.Lee scored his second try just before halftime to see the hosts lead 18-0 at the break.Three tries in the second half to the Hornets, who finally took advantage of the extra player saw the scoreboard narrow to 18-14, but the defence of Brothers held out for a courageous win.In a fiery encounter, Byron Bay continued their good form with a 24-16 win over Casino, Murwullumbah defeated the Tweed Coast Raiders 34-20 and Mullumbimby outlasted Lower Clarence in a high scoring affair 36-30.Kyogle struggled against an impressive Bilambil Jets, going down 52-12.Northern United Fullback Hezekiah McKenzie crossed for a double in his sides big 30-12 victory of Ballina.Next weekend will see a number of catch up matches being played across the Long Weekend after a wet start to the NRRRL season.

Lismore Swans Juniors received special AFL guernseys from the West Coast Eagles, donated to Lismore Mayor Steve Krieg after the 2022 floods. The Eagles, a renowned AFL club, made this gesture to support the community's recovery.Swans President Philip Tsourlinis remarked on the kids' excitement. "It doesn't matter who you support, what code you love; it's just a fantastic gesture by the Eagles and the kids loved receiving an AFL guernsey." He also thanked the Mayor for presenting the guernseys and enjoying a morning of Aussie Rules footy, a sport he is passionate about.Mayor Krieg highlighted the importance of this support."Since the floods, sports participation has decreased, so helping out with participation is key.
