Marist Brothers Junior Rugby League, one of the powerhouse clubs of Group One, have decided not to participate in the 10-week season badly damaged by the on-going coronavirus pandemic.

The cub, which won the Girls Tag Grand Final and were runners-up in the Under 16s and made the semi-finals in the Under 15s and Under 13s last season, made the decision at a general meeting last week.

"There were genuine concerns raised and discussed which included but not limited to the following:

● Additional responsibilities with Covid19 & Concussion protocols – training & game days

● The additional need for volunteers and the lack of committed volunteers

● Uncertainties with COVID and the effects on the welfare of the players, parents/carers and volunteers

● Uncertainties with COVID and the effects of sharing St John's Woodlawn College grounds amenities on both club and school children

● Uncertainties of player numbers and available teams in certain age groups in this and other clubs to warrant a complete round

"After numerous conversations with Group 1 regarding these concerns, the committee voted on whether to proceed or not to proceed with this year's season. After discussing and considering all the above and what is required for this club to be ready for this 10-week non-competitive season in just over three weeks time, we acknowledge the season has been delayed due to Covid19, which remains a huge concern for the community and for this reason, it was a collective mutual decision that our utmost priority is the welfare of the players, coaches, the community and all involved and therefore, we have voted that Lismore Marist Brothers JRL will not be participating in the 2020 season. We understand this will be a huge disappointment for some but believe this is the right decision.

"The decision made was based on the health and safety of all involved, feedback from coaches/parents also the lack of volunteers within the club to implement COVID 19 protocols safely and correctly. The committee will be working hard and preparing for the 2021 season," Marist Brothers JRL said on its Facebook page.

Marist Brothers JRL President Craig Rowe said it is hoping to play in-house games for our mini and mods, also game development days for all ages when restrictions allow.
