Reece Gaddes and Brad Hughes, who starred when Northern Star won Far North Coast Hockey's Division 1 Grand Final, have followed up by winning the Brisbane Hockey Association Division 1 Grand Final.

Gaddes and Hughes, who scored seven goals between them as Star beat Easts Lismore in the Grand Final last month, play for Labrador who beat Eastern Suburbs to win back-to-back Premierships. It has been a memorable year for Labrador who won the Memorial Cup, Minor Premiership and Major Premiership.

Labrador's side featured 10 players who grew up on the NSW North Coast. Luca Brown, Tyler Arundell, Sam Young and Ethan White also all played in Far North Coast Hockey competitions.

Star show hockey club's strength in grand finals

"We won," said Hughes, in a match that was delayed for 60 minutes because of the rain.

"It was a tight game played in torrential rain and with it 1-1 East’s went down to 10 men in the last three minutes. We ran down to East's end and a great individual run by our captain Joe Reardon forced a penalty corner. 'Lethal Weapon' Blake Wotherspoon put it high flying into the top right corner 60 seconds from the end."

Wotherspoon, who is rom Murwillumbah, was named Player of the Match and he also was awarded the Browning medal for being the competition's top scorer.

Wotherspoon had scored the first goal to put Labrador ahead in the 19th minute before Easts’ James Easton scored to restore parity in the third minute of the second half.

Labrador were indebted to goalkeeper Aaron Weiss who made a number of fine saves to keep his side in the match.
