Northern Star competed in seven out of a possible 10 Grand Finals and won five; a wonderful effort and the icing on the cake was the men’s A Grade Grand Final that Star won 10-3 over a shocked East Lismore side.
It's hard to paint a picture with East Lismore in it if you judge the game by the score line but it was still an entertaining match with sections of competitiveness from both sides.
Late winner in Far North Coast Hockey Women's A Grade Grand Final
Star were simply far too good on the day and started their account five minutes into the match when former East Lismore Junior Brad Hughes scored and two minutes later, he did it again; 2-0 after just seven minutes.
Jarred Carney for Easts scored 15 minutes in and Reece Gaddes for Star reciprocated immediately with a back stick shot and the first quarter finished at 3-1. Five minutes into the second quarter and Nick Layton converted a penalty stroke to close the gap and the match settled and remained 3-2 for most of the quarter. Just before half time Tim Hughes, playing with his father, brother and cousin in the Star team scored and it was 4-2 at the break.
In the second section Brad Hughes in a one on one with keeper Shaun Mitchell scored his third followed by Reece Gaddes scoring his second when he converted a penalty corner with a high unstoppable flick. At the end of the third Easts were 6-2 down but still trying.
In the final quarter Brad Hughes scored his fourth, Matt Carter for Easts scored and in the closing stages Tim Hughes scored his second, Brad Hughes his fifth and Richie Whightman rounded out the scoring for Star, to leave the score 10-3.
Thirteen goals in a Grand Final is uncommon and all in attendance were a little surprised.
Star had some great performances with Brad Hughes and Reece Gaddes leading the way with stalwart Mark Harris setting up play consistently; whilst Easts were well supported by Nick Layton, Marcus Currie, Daniel Hughes and Dan Riley.
