When extreme sports Olympic gold medallist Logan Martin performed BMX bike tricks on the ramps at the Goonellabah skate park today, he made it look easy.
Logan said it’s because he eats well, trains in the gym, keeps fit and puts in a lot of time on his bike.
After 16 years of riding, Logan won the first ever gold medal in freestyle BMX at the Tokyo Olympics last year. Yesterday, he was in Lismore with other extreme sports stars, all promoting the Nitro World Games which will be held in Brisbane this October.
Now 28, Logan (a Gold Coast local) hopes to inspire more kids to get into extreme sports - by showcasing freestyle BMX in skate parks and encourage them to have a go on a scooter or a bike.
Joining Logan at the skate park was Nitro Circus rider and X Games medallist winner Jaie Toohey. Also with them was four-time Nitro World Games winner Ryan Williams riding a scooter, showing kids some tricks.
“Ryan is a massive action sports star world wide – lots of people know him,” Logan said. “We are all here, hanging with the kids, riding with them, showing them a few tricks and signing autographs.”
Nitro World games event director Richard King said the event is the next level of action sports.
“Nitro World games was developed with Nitro Circus star Travis Pastrana,” he said.
“We have six disciplines: BMX best trick, BMX triple hit; freestyle motor cross; freestyle motor cross best trick; skate board and scooter best tricks.
“There’s no other event that has such a wide variety of action sports in the world. We have the best action sports people in the world coming to Brisbane for the event.
“We also have a lot of competitors from Australia, because right now, it’s one of the hot beds of action globally.
“Within the global action sports scene, Nitro is the only one that has scooter included in it.
“Ryan Williams is Australian and one of the best scooter riders in the world. Every day he finds ways to learn new tricks and always tries to progress the sport.
“One of the most famous tricks everyone knows is one of Jaie Toohey’s called ‘the tail whip to nothing bike flip’. He flips the bike forward while he stays static in the air 50 feet above the ground.
“These guys are creating world first tricks all the time.”
“Sometimes you crash and break skin, but you get back up and you try it again.
“Seeing these tricks, we might feel fear and hold our breath, but for them, it’s calculated fear. These guys practice so hard and are confident in achieving success."
Richard said scooter and BMX riding is still seen as just a community subculture, “but bringing these guys to regional areas helps inspire kids to see what they can become and take it to the next level”.
"The competition features new big air formats, breakthrough ramp technology and innovative judging criteria," he said
“Nitro World Games has shifted the landscape for both athletes and the industry alike since its 2016 debut.
“The event immediately revitalized competition after years of stagnation, giving athletes a transformational platform to push the limits of progression as they attempted world’s first tricks never seen before.”
On October 22 and 23, 80 of the best BMX, Skateboard and FMX action sports athletes in the world will descend on Suncorp Stadium for the Nitro World Games in Brisbane.
