The mornings are cold and the days are beautiful which means winter is virtually here and the 2023 Lismore Lantern Parade is around the corner.
Saturday, June 24 should be written on your calendar or locked into your smartphone by now.
With four weeks until the Lantern Parade hits the CBD streets, organisations are helping Jyllie Jackson and her team of volunteers out.
Sourdough, a women in business networking group, organised for real estate agent Katrina Boheme and her team to pay for and decorate lanterns in the last week.
The Lismore-based NSW SES team of volunteers have been donating their time for the last month to build a new Lantern Parade SES boat.
Volunteer Cheyne Paul told the Lismore App the new boat is an update on the previous version which had been in operation since her 15 years with the SES.
"Our lantern was severely damaged by the flood in 2017 and we had to do some makeshift repairs to get it through that year and the following couple of years."
"I think we missed a year for COVID and then in 2022, it was obliterated, it was obliterated by the flood and we had to make it work for the 2022 Lantern Parade. We stuck it back together with a whole lot of cellotape and love."
"Then this year, I approached Jyllie and said would we be able to build a new lantern and I requested funding through our service which came through."
"We thought it would be a good opportunity to get ourselves back into a more positive light with the community. There's a lot of people who still have a bit of a negative viewpoint on us, which is a bit sad. But, we want the community to know that we're still here and we're still doing what we do best and we're looking to work together, as well as this being a really good team building exercise for us."
The new boat is a replica of one of the seven boats used in the rescues last year and while the naming process has not been finalised, the favourite name is Lismore SES 261.
"That's our job number for the 2022 flood, it's an event number. We've put a poll out to our internal members to confirm the name but I think it's going to be called Lismore SES 261 and the words never give up."
"With the boat, we're going to be carrying a large orange love heart to symbolise that we are still here and we aren't giving up."

Cheyne said they hope to have 15 to 20 SES volunteers walking in the Lantern Parade this year not just from Lismore but from Casino and Ballina, the other parts of the Northern Rivers that were also affected by the impact of February 28 2022.
Jyllie Jackson added that the SES also volunteer their time to help with people control and directions at each Lantern Parade so the SES will be well represented in 2023.
Volunteers is still an area that Jyllie is desperately trying to source. As you can imagine, putting on and running an event of this size and scale is a huge task and it takes a lot of volunteers to make it the spectacle it is each year.
"If you only have time on the weekend," Jyllie said, "We would welcome you. I am here Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm."
