Marine Rescue NSW volunteers assist six kayakers in waters off Cape Byron

Volunteers from Marine Rescue Brunswick have asked boaters and paddlers to check conditions after they assisted six kayakers in waters off Cape Byron after strong winds and currents hindered their return to shore.

Marine Rescue NSW Inspector John Murray said a call for assistance was received around 12.15pm today.

“A group of six people on board three double kayaks were reported to be struggling against strong winds and currents.

“With only three people in the group able to paddle, the winds and currents made their journey home difficult.

“Marine Rescue NSW vessel Brunswick 30 was tasked to respond to the kayakers, who were located approximately 1.5 nautical miles off Cape Byron.

“Marine Rescue NSW volunteers on board BR 30 arrived on scene within 10 minutes, assisted the six people onto BR 30 and safely towed the kayaks to shore.

“We ask all boaters and paddlers to check conditions before heading out and monitor for changes during their journey,” Inspector Murray said.
