LISMORE DECIDES: Voting is underway for the 2023 State Election

The polls are open, and voting is underway to decide who will represent Lismore in the NSW State Parliament for the next four years.

Janelle Saffin (Labor) won the seat in 2019, following the retirement of long-term MP Thomas George (Nationals). Saffin became the first female to hold the seat, and only the second Labor MP to represent the electorate since its creation in 1927.

This election there are eight candidates fighting for your vote. In the order they appear on the ballot, they are:

  • Matthew Bertalli (Shooters, Fishers and Farmers)
  • Janelle Saffin (Labor)
  • James McKenzie (Independent)
  • Allen Crosthwaite (Independent)
  • Vanessa Rosayro (Animal Justice Party)
  • Ross Honniball (Sustainable Australia Party)
  • Adam Guise (The Greens)
  • Alex Rubin (The Nationals)

The Lismore App spoke to the three main contenders today following the casting of their vote, to see how they were feeling with only a few hours to go.

Labor’s Janelle Saffin cast her vote at the Molesworth Street polling booth in Lismore CBD. She said she feels calm, and believes she has done everything she can to prove why she deserves a second term.

“I’ll continue to be exactly as I am. I stand by my record of advocacy and achievement, and I’ll also do all the things we need to do to rebuild, recover, and bring back our heart,” Ms Saffin said.

The Nationals’ Alex Rubin said it had been a long few weeks, but is proud of the campaign he has run.

“45,000km, one new windscreen, 4 new tyres and 1 new rim… [I’m] tired but proud of the team, we have run an honest and polite campaign,” Mr Rubin said.

“After my time in army, I treasure democracy. We need to bring the hope back to Lismore and tame the floods.”

The Greens’ Adam Guise said he is excited to be on the final sprint.

“We are putting forward a positive and progressive vision for change,” Mr Guise said.

“We need transformational change for people and the planet and together we can get it done!”

According to the latest Sportsbet odds, punters seem certain Labor will hold the seat, with Janelle Saffin at $1.25, Adam Guise at $5, Alex Rubin at $10, and an Independent win unlikely at $21.

Polling booths are open until 6pm tonight. For a full list of where to vote, you can read our earlier story: It is voting day 2023 - here's the final word
