Lachlan O'Sullivan, who plays with a team of women for Rous Hotel Softball Club's Rangers in the Far North Coast Softball Association competition, has been named in the Softball NSW Under 14 Boys Regional Team, which was announced on Thursday.
Lachlan, who prefers to play centre field, second base and short stop positions, was chosen after Lachlan was selected by Softball NSW for the Under 14 Final Selection Camp last month. He had impressed the selectors representing Newcastle at the Under 14 NSW State Championships in December.
He has been playing softball for the past three seasons. Originally, a member of Rous Hotel Softball Club's Rascals, he quickly impressed coaches and his peers with his quickness around the bases, his hard hitting and sensational fielding, especially in the outfield, said Far North Coast Softball Association Secretary Di McGowen.
"Playing for Rangers, Rous Hotel Softball’s Division 1 team, has help developed his skills playing against and with a higher level of play."
Lachlan O'Sullivan has been chosen to play in Softball NSW's Under 14 Boys Regional Team.
Lachlan, a student at St John's College Woodlawn, comes from a baseball family.
"He has developed a love of the sport and has also shown a keenness for umpiring, which FNCS is encouraging him to purse."
Lachlan's mum Aurora O'Sullivan said "Lachlan was very pleased and we're very proud."
Lachlan has been named in the Country Sliders squad, which is coached by Kathryn Stuart. He will now start training as part of the NSW Youth Pathways Program.
"Due to the cancellation of the 2021 Under 14 National Championships (due to the coronavirus pandemic) these teams will now be training towards other opportunities that will be finalised in the coming week," said Softball NSW.
