Alstonville FC Women's Premier League side that had won all three trophies in 2020, including the Minor Premiership, fought to the very end in a narrow 2-1 loss in the Women's Premier League Grand Final to holders Lennox Head FC at Crawford Park, Alstonville, on Friday evening.
"We missed the start," said Villa Women's coach Andy Brown. "Their signing from the Gold Coast United's Premier League side, Deeanna Thompson, was in good touch."
Thompson, Football Far North Coast's Golden Boot winner, scored twice within the first 20 minutes to set up the Sharks victory.
Villa got a foothold into the match but were behind by Thompson's two goals at half-time.
"We dominated a lot of the second half and were awarded a penalty with 10 minutes to go. Freya Kirbach, who is 15, took it and scored," said Brown.
"We have always tried to promote the young girls and only two were over 20 in the side, and just over 20 at that."
Freya Kirbach, who was a junior at Alstonville FC, deregistered from Mudgeeraba Soccer Club in Football Gold Coast's Under 16 Girls competition due to the Queensland Government Border Bubble, to return home. Jade Parkin, also 15, and another Alstonville local, deregistered from Gold Coast United and scored the winner for Villa against Lismore Thistles in the semi-final. Thompson and her Sharks' team-mates Reese Donnelly and Alisa Tomasella also play for Gold Coast United.

"The girls gave 110 percent and cannot be faulted. We just could not get the ball into their net again, we had plenty of opportunities, but it was not to be."

Villa were missing five players from last season's side, who also lost to Lennox Head in the Grand Final last season.
However it has had the most successful season in the club's history, winning the Summer Youth Cup, the Callan McMillan Memorial Shield and the Premier League champions.
Thompson, who won Queensland's National Premier Leagues (NPL) Women’s competition Golden Boot last year, was awarded the Lisa Casagrande Medal for Player of the Match by Lisa Casagrande's father Primo.
Parkin, Kirbach, Thompson, Donnelly and Tomasella will return to their clubs on the Gold Coast on October 1.
