Keen Street and Lismore Square last Friday: what happened?A photo of Keen Street during last Friday's intense rain and hail storm.

Last Friday night, Lismore was hit by a small but severe weather cell that brought hail and heavy rain in a short period of time. The Lismore Airport recorded 18.8mm and some places like Caniaba were hit by a large hail storm that turned the grass white.

For some people and businesses, it was a test of how well new renovations or rebuilds performed during an intense weather system.

The new Keen Street footpath, only recently completed, did not fare so well as was shown on social media with the newly built drainage system failing to cope with the short intense burst of rain.

The Lismore App went looking for explanations as to why this occurred so soon after the upgrade.

Lismore City Council General Manager John Walker said, "Council is investigating the issue, which may have been partly caused by flood debris further down the trunk line."

The next video to catch people off-guard was at the Lismore Shopping Centre when someone recorded water coming through the roof and into the shopping centre itself.

Lismore Shopping Square Centre Manager Shaun Haysom told the Lismore App he cannot say too much "simply due to the fact our claim is currently underway with our Insurance company in relation to the storm".

"It’s obvious from the photos and videos on Facebook that unfortunately, water entered several of our tenancies. This was a result of hail building up in the box gutters. Although hailstorms are nothing new, it’s highlighted some areas of opportunity with the box gutters and some simple roof flashing which is being rectified."

"Our Centre cleaners in collaboration with our tenants simply cleaned up the water and the Centre traded as normal the following day."

With storm season just around the corner, there will be more days when the rebuild, renovation and upgrades will be tested.
