Goonellabah FC won for the second successive match in the ANZAC Day Cup as the Hornets came away with the spoils at Maclean last night.
Hornets coach Michael Primiano said it was "a fantastic win with two awesome goals".
Maclean having lost at Wherrett Park to South Lismore last Friday, would have been seeking a reaction but Goonellabah were two goals up at half-time.
"There were some great combination passes and a cross into the box which fell to Kurt Stephens. He took on a defender and finished well," said Primiano.
"Then with about 10 minutes to go before half-time Harry Hampson, who I had to drop into midfield, took a few players on and, was probably about 25 metres out, hit one of the best knuckle balls I've seen so far and beat the keeper for our second."
Goonellabah had chances to extend their in the second half with Josh Moore Evans missing a penalty after Tommy Pitman had been fouled.
"We basically didn't have to do anything stupid when Maclean scored and we certainly had a few one-on-ones with the goalkeeper and a missed penalty. We just need to learn how to punish teams when they make a mistake, something we will be drilling into the boys this season," said Primiano.
'But we got the win and that's all to the boys digging in and working hard until the final whistle.
"I thought the boys played a lot better last night as they are still combining with each other and finding each other so there were some really good signs coming through."
