Goonellabah FC travelled to Maclean for an important Football Far North Coast Premier League Match and came away with more than three points - they also achieved their first clean sheet of the shortened season.

"Robbo (goalkeeper Brad Robertson) was very happy about that," said the Hornets' coach Michael Primiano.

It was a very tight match and the Hornets came away with the three points when leading scorer Tommy Pitman found himself in a one-on-one with Maclean goalkeeper Alex Moffit and put the ball into the back of the net.

Maclean then threw the kitchen sink at the Hornets.

"We managed to hang on for the win," said Primiano. "Our defence was really strong and composed for the last 15 minutes as Mclean were throwing everything at us."

It was a significant win for Goonellabah and showed the depth of the squad.

"We made a few changes, one very early in the game with Izac (Monsuere) having to come off about 25 minutes into the game with a corked leg and being replaced by Brady Toniello," said Primiano.

"The other changes were made with Reggie (Sharpe), who is still getting back into full swing after returning from injury, with "J " (Claude Kalo) coming off the bench to give him a breather. Also we used Fraser Harrison to give Aaron Kelly a breather."

Maclean, who were top of the table in the early part of the delayed season, have now lost their past five matches but gave Goonellabah a good game.

"The boys knew it was going to be a physical game and we needed to stay strong together if we were to have any effect on Mclean and the boys did just that for the full 90 minutes," said Primiano.

"They fought hard and it paid off. We definitely had opportunities to score a couple of others but couldn't get the last bit right but it didn't stop our attackers from trying."

Goonellabah FC are unbeaten in five matches and have won their last two. They moved into third third place on the table.
