An upset and a big win in Hooker League cricket action

There was another big upset for the second week in a row in LJ Hooker League cricket on Saturday.

Third-placed Marist Brothers won the toss in Pottsville and sent the home side into bat, restricting them to 8/139 in their 40 overs.

The Brothers bowlers failed to finish off the Pottsville tail end, having had them 5/30 and 6/77.

Opening bowlers Brendan Mitchell, with 3/16 and Harry Gillett, with 3/28, were the best of the attack.

Unfortunately, Brothers could not put partnerships together at any stage during their innings, eventually all out for 119 in the 33rd over.

Marist Brothers will hope several of the regular first graders return for their crucial clash with Casino next week at home, after losing two out of their last three matches.

Goonellabah Workers Sports were impressive in their top-of-the-table clash with Cudgen at Oakes Oval.

GWS won the toss and sent Cudgen in, with Kaleb Armstrong striking early.

After a 44-run, second-wicket stand, Goonellabah were able to take regular wickets, restricting the Hornets to 8/168 after their allotted overs.

Alec Watson took 3/21 and Brady Toniello 2/29 to be the best of the bowlers.

A solid opening stand of 67 set Goonellabah a solid platform in the run chase, with Tom Standish going on to score 77, Jack Cooper had a quickfire 46 at the top of the order and Kevin Warid finished with 15.

Goonellabah passed the Cudgen total in the 37th over and now stretch their lead at the top of the table to 6 competition points over Tweed Banora Colts, who travel to Oakes Oval next week to clash with Goonellabah, in what should be again a top-quality contest.
