Rain cancels speedway, most cricket and softball

This week's rain has taken its toll on a number of weekend sports events.

Lismore Speedway has been postponed to next weekend, Saturday February 27, due to the combination of a new track surface and the incessant heavy rain over the past 24 hours.

“The place just cannot take any more water,” promoter David Lander said Friday morning after a ground inspection.

“With our new track surface after twenty truck loads of clay were brought in, if we tried to run it now after the heavy rain, it would be a motocross track. Also the grounds are water logged and the upcoming forecast is not promising either.”

So, round ten of the McCosker Super Sedan Series, which was the major attraction for the February 20 fixture, has been put back seven days.

Far North Coast Softball has cancelled tonight's mixed round and a decision will be made in the morning regarding tomorrow's full round of matches.

Northern Rivers Cricket League announced this afternoon that all matches scheduled tomorrow on turf wickets (with the exception of Stan Payne Oval) are off tomorrow, in addition to all Northern Rivers Cricket League games scheduled for Casino and Kyogle synthetic wickets tomorrow are off.

A decision will be made by 9am tomorrow morning by the wet weather committee for all NRCL games scheduled for Lismore synthetic wickets and the game at Stan Payne Oval in Evans Head.

The Far North Coast Cricket Council L J Hooker League match between Byron Bay and Alstonville at Cavanbah Sports Complex is off and it is looking very likely that Lismore Workers match with Tintenbar-East Ballina at Nielson Park will be postponed. A final inspection and decision will take place before 9am in the morning.

Good luck to the Northern Rivers Titan Juniors featuring local players who will be playing over the weekend in non-rain affected Armidale as they take on the Northern Tigers.

The Lismore Under 16's Girls Touch Football team are playing in the State Cup and the NSW Country Swimming Championships are on in Homebush, Sydney.
