Nimbin Headers Football Club has had its best-ever result winning Football Far North Coast Division One Grand Final.

Nimbin Headers, who finished third in the season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic, beat Lennox Head 2-1 in a pulsating final before a fervent crowd at the Headers' home ground last Sunday.

""it was a wonderful day, a wonderful community day," said Nimbin Headers' committee member Nigel Hayes, a founding member of the club in 1985.

"A home Grand Final was a real one-off and it was the best result ˆn our history.

"We were fortunate to get Oli O'Reilly, a real leader on the park, and a wonderful kid."

O'Reilly, 17, played for Richmond Rovers last season before heading to Alicante, Spain, but returned when COVID-19 shut down sport in Europe earlier this year.

Lennox Head, who had finished fourth in Division One, took the lead at Nimbin after around 15 minutes and held the lead until half-time. It looked like the Sharks would hold up despite intense pressure before the Headers' Quinlan Cox equalised with about 10 minutes to go.

The match went into extra-time, 10 minutes a half, and with the match looking ike it might end in penalties, Headers Club President Ruben Mack put in a great cross from out wide that Beau Grabovsky headed into the back of the net with about a knute to go.

The Headers crowd went wild and when the final whistle blew the crowd swarmed onto the field to congratulate their heroes.

"We kept the crowd engaged until the very end," said Hayes, who said he felt 300-350 supported his players.

Hayes said the priority was to keep the nucleus of the side, especially O'Reilly, as next season hopefully the Grand final win will see promotion to the Premier League .
