Former Eastern Districts Cricket Club player Simon Milenko scored his maiden Sheffield Shields century to rescue his club Tasmania yesterday.
Milenko, who plays for Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes, hit 100 runs off 134 balls, including nine fours and four sixes, against South Australia on Blundstone Arena (Bellerive Oval) in Hobart.
Milenko, 31, came to the crease with his team wobbling at 5-121 and controlled his side's tail enders and remarkably scored 100 of Tasmania's last 133 runs.
He shared a 57-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Gabe Bell (six) and was on 95 when Bell fell.
"It was mostly relief, to be perfectly honest," Milenko told AAP about his maiden century, which came after 10 fifties across 26 first-class matches.
"It's good be able to go all the way and get us to up to a total that's a little more competitive on a reasonably good wicket.
"It all happened fairly quickly. When you're picking up those boundaries, the scoreboard ticks over."
Milenko, an all-rounder, was brought into the side after the Tigers were thrashed inside two days by Queensland.
Milenko, who grew up in Eureka, went to Trinity Catholic College. He was another cricketer helped by Adam Gilchrist's father Stan, who organised Milenko to spend a year playing cricket in the UK.
He played for Eastern Districts before moving to study at Bond University on the Gold Coast, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce and on completion began working for KPMG, the auditing and accounting firm, before moving to Walz Construction. He secured a Queensland Cricket in 2014 and accepted an offer to play for Tasmania in 2016.
Milenko married his fiance Kim Hart in May.
