Lismore end the season with solid hit out

Lismore Rugby Club's First Grade side have gone down to the Byron Shire Rebels in the final match of the season at Lismore Rugby Park.

It was an unfortunate end to the season with the team still looking for they first win of the year, but it was not to be.

The home side started the clash strongly, dominating territory and possession in the opening minutes before Byron's first hard running attacking raid netted the first try of the match, to Harry Simmonds after nine minutes.

Excellent support play from the Rebels resulted in their second try to Will Latham six minutes later, to see them step out to a 14-0 lead.

Lismore were able to apply pressure from the kick off which resulted in try scoring expert Gavin Tulk barge over from close range, with Jerome "The Irishman" adding the extras.

Byron were then able to put together two more tries before halftime, with a try to their hooker out wide and a try from a scrum on halfway to their outside centre to push the score out to 26-7 at the break.

Byron's ill discipline kept Lismore in the contest in the second half, with two yellow cards issued within six minutes of the break, resulting in a try to Willie Fairweather, after chasing his own kick into space, which "The Irishman" converted to take the score to 26-14.

Unfortunately this was to be the last fo the points, with Byron Shire scoring two more tries to Eden Cruickshank and Gavin McGonagie in the second half to run out 38-14 victors.

Credit must go to club stalwart Benny Muldoon for entertaining the crowd as ground announcer across the afternoon.

In the lower grades, the Rebels took out the Reserve Grade match 52-14, with tries to Mitchell Cox and Bronson Scofield.

Lismore were victorious in the Women's 12's match 27-0 and the U/18 Colts went down to Lennox Head 24-0.

The Women and U/18 Colts side will progress through to the Semi Finals in two weeks time after securing top four finishes.
