Lismore schoolboy Hamish Weekes is making his debut for Marist Brothers' First Grade side this afternoon in a classic rite of passage under the scorching Australian summer sun against rivals Northern Districts at Heaps Oval in the Northern Rivers Cricket League.

The 13-year-old stands close to 6 feet tall already with a calm demeanor that compliments his ambitions to one day don the baggy green for his country.

The middle sibling of a family of three boys, Weekes grew up in Lismore taking to the game well in juniors with his best to date batting score standing at 157 not out.

Weekes describes himself as a bowling all-rounder, yet takes much inspiration from fellow left-armer, Australian cricketer Mitchell Starc.

“I like Starc, he’s a left-armer like me,” Weekes said.

“I want to take my cricket as far as I can.

“My dream is to play for Australia.

“There’s a lot of hard work that’s needed to do that.”

A well spoken, confident yet humble young man, Hamish Weekes gives the impression he is going places.

Like many talented young players, Hamish loves the team camaraderie as well as the traditions of the game which are now enjoyed the world over.

“Everything about the game is just amazing,” he said.

Weekes currently plays for Marist Brothers U14s and also plays U16s with a few of his older teammates.

He also plays rep cricket for the Gold Coast.

After performing well in the Third and Second Grade sides, Marist Brothers Cricket Club Glen Lees promoted Weekes to First Grade.

“I got asked to play in the Third Grade team and did well and it's just gone from there,” Weekes said.

Captain of Marist Brothers 1st Grade, Luke Hamshaw said Hamish is an exciting kid.

“We started him in Thirds and he performed well there so we put him up to Seconds and he kept performing,” said Hamshaw.

“He’s only young but he’s definitely earned his shot today, so hopefully he can take it with both hands.”

Weekes did not bowl as Northern Districts were bowled out for 206 in the 39th over, but took a catch as he removed the dangerous Anthony Armstrong.
