SCU ranks among world’s top Young Universities – again

On June 30, the Lismore App reported that Southern Cross University (SCU) increased its global ranking by 50 places in the internationally renowned Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2024, placing it in the top 660 institutions for the first time.

Now, SCU has revealed it has kept its Top 200 spot in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings.

Maintaining its place at 164 in this year’s rankings – and among the Top 200, where it’s ranked since first being listed in 2016 – Southern Cross University continues to stack up admirably amongst its global peers.

In order to rank the world’s young universities – defined as institutions established 50 years ago or less – Times Higher Education assesses research-intensive universities across the core missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. This is the same methodology used to calculate the THE World University Rankings, but with weightings reflecting the profile of young universities.

"The fact we’ve maintained our Times Higher Education ranking is an excellent result,” said Professor Mary Spongberg, Southern Cross University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Academic Capability).

“Southern Cross University’s continued recognition in these international rankings is a welcome reflection of our ongoing commitment to delivering world-class education and research.”

Vice-President (Engagement), Mr Ben Roche, is similarly proud of, but not surprised by, the University’s consistent presence in this year’s ranking.

“To consistently rank in THE’s top 200 Young Universities globally is a phenomenal result, particularly considering we’re a regionally-based institution,” said Mr Roche.

“This, together with our growing research profile and strong ties to the local community and industry partners, will consolidate our position as a university of choice for students from near and far, which can only continue as international students return following the pandemic."
