Lismore welcomes four new faces to the Richmond Police DistrictKy Faber, Eden Macleod, Brendan Parry and Kayla McSpadden starting their police careers at Richmond Police District

This week starts a new career for four freshly graduated Probationary Constables at Richmond District Police headquarters in Zadoc Street.

Ky Faber, Eden Macleod, Brendan Parry and Kayla McSpadden left the Goulburn Academy last week to start their new jobs in Lismore on Monday.

During their first induction meeting this morning, the "Probies", as they are called, were gaining an understanding of what is expected of them over the next three years being based in Lismore.

For the next 6 weeks, the Probationary Constables will be working with two other officers, including their training officer, to introduce them to general duties police work. If all goes well, they will move to working with just the training officer until the 12-month mark.

Like any apprentice, the Probies will be observed undertaking certain tasks like break & enter or a motor vehicle accident and gradually increase their responsibilities to take the lead role during the general duty phase of their career.

Brendan and Kayla are Northern Rivers locals. Brendan is part of the well-known Lismore Parry family and is the son of Bruce Parry from Summerland Credit Union. Kayla is a mother of two from Alstonville.

For Brendan, joining the police force is always something he has wanted to do.

"I've always wanted to be part of this community. They have a full-time rescue unit as part of Lismore and that's where I want to go towards."

While Brendan is clear he wants to rescue people from cliffs and car accidents, Kayla is not sure what her end goal is at this early stage of her police career.

"I love a challenge. I did want to become a detective, but after training, maybe something more hands-on now. We'll see where it takes me."

Ky and Eden are from Lake Macquarie. Their situation is more unusual as they are a couple that has been through the Goulburn Academy and have been posted to Lismore together for the three-year tenure.

"We got told we would probably be posted to different areas, but we're lucky I guess," Eden said, "We put Richmond as our first choice for the lifestyle up here. It will be an adventure of living somewhere new. It's like being on holiday."

"It's also sort of similar to home, a similar vibe," Ky added, "It's also different from home. We didn't want to live in the same spot the whole time."

Eden is unsure of her future direction in the NSW police force; however, Ky wants to join the Tactical Operations Unit.

"While most TOUs are based in Sydney, there is a regional support group in Ballina which you can do part-time, so I want to join that first and see if I like it before deciding on moving to Sydney."

There will be decisions that need to be made in the future for Eden and Ky, depending on the path they choose, they are supportive of each other.

"We each have our own identities, and we're on our own journeys. It's good we can be here to support each other and still maintain our relationship, but we're here doing our own thing."

Now, you've met the four new Richmond Police District recruits. Make them welcome when you see them walking the beat.
