Save this date in your mobile phone calendar, or if you're still old school, write it on your physical calendar, Wednesday, July 6. That is the day that the Lismore Shopping Square will be reopening its doors to the public for the first time since the February 28 flood.
The aerial photo from NR Aerial Photography clearly shows the Lismore Square going under for the first time in its 43 year history.
CEO of the family-owned McConaghy Properties which purchased the Square in 1997, told the Lismore App "We arrived on site within the first week of the flood and set ourselves an ambitious target to reopen the centre in 100 days. Most people laughed at us when we said that but here we are under 100 days later announcing we're reopening the centre."
The actual number of days will be 128 on July 6 but that in itself is still an amazing feat considering the size and scale of this cleanup and rebuild project. The logistics alone are enough to boggle the mind.
190 trades have been involved and continue to be involved on the site. They are from all over the east coast of Australia from as far as Townsville and Melbourne as well as locals to get to the July 6 opening day and then beyond.
The opening will be staggered, as you would expect, with anchor businesses Big W and Woolworths first followed by K-Mart and Coles also in July. There will be some specialty shops opening on July 6 also, however, most will open periodically throughout the rest of the year.

"Everyone's got a different challenge," Gary said, " Whether it's the supply chain, whether it's staffing issues, all of those things are present for the retailers we work with."
"We are very confident that we'll be able to get all of our retailers back in some form and stage those specialty shops in the coming months."
Gary is confident they will have 100% retail capacity before Christmas. Of course, there will be some tenants that could not afford to return but that leaves space for new tenants and expansion for others.
"We have had some tenants ask for more space so they could do a bigger shop for the community and also had some tenants that have said they would love to come to Lismore."
When asked if some were national brands, Gary replied, "Of course, there will be national brands coming in and they will be announced closer to the day. I think it's important we focus on letting the community know that it's (The Lismore Square) is coming back. We're back and we're stimulating the economy."
In terms of stimulating the economy, we are talking 1000 jobs either directly or indirectly so a vital part of the Lismore flood recovery.
"We want those jobs back, we want to get those people back to work. So, it's very important that we get this building back up as quickly as we can."
Is there anything new in the Lismore Square rebuild?
"Absolutely, there are some aesthetic changes that we're really excited to announce to our retailers and customers in the coming weeks."
"There will be things that the customers will be really delighted that we've spent money on to really improve the amenity for the customers and I think there's going to be some very happy faces when they see us open the doors."
"The full opening of Lismore Square will take some months, but we promise to provide Lismore with a local community shopping centre you can be proud of, and which will once again provide you with all your retail everyday shopping needs and services."
