Hundreds of food hampers delivered in time for Easter

Families still recovering from the impact of last year's floods will receive some much-needed help ahead of Easter, with more than 200 food hampers being delivered today.

Serving Our People is a not-for-profit organisation that has partnered with Foodbank NSW to distribute hampers around Lismore and the villages.

Founder of Serving Our People Yas Matbouly said the hampers are arriving at a really important time for families still recovering.

“Lots of the recipients that we've worked with over the past year and a bit since the flooding has happened, have been struggling on many different levels - some of them have insurance, some of them don't have insurance, some of them said to us that they still haven't plastered walls which allows them to move back into their homes,” he said.

“They're still struggling and they still have to continue living their normal lives, taking their kids to school and so on, but it's very difficult with the rising cost of living too.”

These hampers are made up of non-perishable food items such as tinned fruit and vegetables, pasta sauces, noodles, and soups.

Mr Matbouly said they provide basic needs to people who reached out and asked for a little extra assistance.

“As Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs described, the basic needs are shelter and food, and when the cost of living is rising so much and you're not able to continue - then obviously you can't afford to even feed your children, you're going to choose either to run your car or to feed your children, or to live in a rental home until your house is ready or to feed your children.”

“So, it's the basic essentials really, we're the richest country in the world, and predominantly these issues in our country should not be happening.”

Guilherme Olivera is the Delivery and Logistics Manager for Serving Our People, he has been out delivering these hampers to the community.

“I feel extremely grateful to be able to provide and to be on the front position because I'm the one who's dealing with the recipient on a daily basis. I feel extremely blessed to be in the position,” he said.

“Hampers are extremely helpful, because we can see the rise of demand, we've been getting more and more requests on a daily basis, and whenever we deliver, the recipient seems to be extremely grateful.”

“If everybody does a little bit, it becomes a lot, so people coming together helping out. It can be just a small delivery, but it makes a massive difference.”

“Sometimes we take for granted how powerful one small action can be. So just to keep in people's mind that it's important to help, it’s important to come together. There's a lot of people in need, and sometimes you don't need to do a lot, but you can create a massive impact in someone's life.”
