Fruitopia brings flirting, strutting, pooches and cakes to the fair

When this weekend’s Fruitopia Fair Day opens at 11am with a flirting workshop, you know it’s going to be a fun event.

This Sunday, Tropical Fruits’ annual fair day is making a comeback.

Cancelled for the past two years because of pandemic and natural disasters, the family-friendly day for the LGBTIQ+ community is back more colourful than ever.

Tropical Fruits event coordinator Jaimie Nash said it’s exciting to be bringing Fruitopia back to the Lismore Showgrounds.

“It’s a public event, run for and targeted at the LGBTIQ rainbow community and their dogs,” she laughed.

“It’s also a chance for our local club to fundraise because we’ve been unable to for so long.”

At the fair day, the popular dog competition will see dogs and their owners and run an obstacle course – with a special emphasis on the dressing up of dog and owner to look like each other.

There’s also a cake bake off competition that anyone can enter and cakes need to be dropped off between 10 and 11am.

The bake off judges include Maud ‘let them eat cake’ Boate, Alex from The Boys and councilor Elly Bird.

There’s also a photo competition, a drag competition and a hat competition.

“We will also have raffles, and stalls for people to sell things and applications are still open,” Jaimie said.

“Having this family friendly day is important because everyone needs to reunite and come together after the flood and have some fun.

“We’ve been through so much.

“The exciting news is that we’ll also be announcing our theme for the New Year’s Eve party this year.”
