Workers' Kyle Stones' seven wickets on Hooker League debutLismore Workers' Kyle Stones was clapped off after taking five wickets in the victory over Tintenbar-East Ballina in his debut T20 Hooker League.

Kyle Stones received a group email from Lismore Workers Cricket Club' Anthony MacDonald on Friday evening stating a mixed First Grade team was short.

The 19-year-old right-handed medium pace bowler, who has played Second and Third Grade in the Northern Rivers Concreting Northern Rivers Cricket League, said he was available.

"I did not think it was the T20 Hooker League (the region's elite competition) until we got in the car and headed to Pottsville," said Kyle, who best figures for the season were 2/35 runs off four overs last November.

"Then I thought it would be unlikely I would get to bowl with the regulars like the captain Jason Caught and Brady Toniello sure to bowl."

When Kyle, an Aussie Rules referee who won AFLQ Northern Rivers' Golden Whistle Award in 2017, reached Seabreeze Oval he was told he would be bowling overs 6, 8, 10 and 12.

Workers, who had to call in Brady Toniello's father Jason when Anthony MacDonald was delayed from an overseas flight, faced the Far North Coast Cricket Council's unbeaten side Pottsville first at 8.30am.

Brady Toniello (2-23 off 4 overs) and Caught (0-41) opened the bowling, wth Toniello capturing the first wicket with only 12 runs on the board. However five of Pottsville's batsmen scored between 20 and 40 and it was Kyle Stones who did the damage and kept the scoring down too.

His first wicket in the T20 Hooker League was Pottsville's Tait Burns and then the danger man and Pottsville captain Jayden Hoare.

"I was pretty happy. I got two wickets for 16 runs in four overs. I had been quite economical and I was quite happy with that," said Kyle, who works part-time with the AFL and full-time with Woolworths, Byron Bay.

Pottsville reached 6/167 off 20 overs and Workers' teenage opener Tom Standish hit 35 runs off 23 balls and Hamish Clacher smashed 33 off 16 balls with three sixes. Only captain Jason Caught with 26 not out off 20 deliveries was able to reach double figures and Workers lost by 20 runs to make it three losses from three matches.

In the afternoon, Workers played Tintenbar-East Ballina, who had earlier lost to Pottsville despite hitting 171. Workers won the toss and elected to bat, making 139, which looked a very obtainable total.

However, Tintenbar-East Ballina found Kyle Stones unplayable.

"I had not taken five wickets since playing junior cricket and again I was to bowl overs 6, 8, 10 and 12.

"I took a wicket with my first ball, then one each in overs two and three and two in my final over. One was bowled, three were caught and I took a caught and bowled, which was just as well as I had dropped a much easier chance just before that," Kyle said.

MacDonald, who arrived to play the Tintenbar-East Ballina match, said he had been told by captain Caught that Kyle had bowled well against Pottsville.

"In the 2nd game Kyle kept a good length and they couldn’t get him away. It was great," MacDonald said.

Caught added: "He's an awkward bowler and no one has seen him before. They just didn't know how to play him."

Pottsville were bowled out for 119 to give Lismore Workers their first win the T20 Hooker League. The matches also saw Cameron Bryant, second highest run scorer in Northern Rivers Concreting Northern Rivers Cricket League for Eastern Districts, make his debut for his new club Lismore Workers.

Despite being player of the match Kyle said he was given no indication he would play Hooker League next Saturday.

"Jason said to keep an eye on the emails and that if they're short I might get the call up again," he said.

"It was pretty special day."
