With two new marquee enclosures and record horse race prize money of $75,000, the buzz is in the air for the 2019 O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing Lismore Cup on Thursday, September 19.
Whether you are in it for the chance to dress up, socialise or take a punt on the horse races, the annual Lismore horse racing event is set to be bigger than ever before.
Set during the Lismore Turf Club’s Spring Racing Carnival, it has drawn crowds upwards of 5000 people in recent years.
Lismore Turf Club secretary manager Scott Jones said this year, the event had expanded to having four areas people could book tickets into, in order to cater for a wider audience.
“General admission tickets cost $25, but tickets to the Events Party Hire VIP Marquee Enclosure (valued at $160 per person) have already sold out in record time,” Mr Jones said.
“I’m still getting a phone calls from people wanting to get in.
“We’ve gone to online ticketing this year for the first time and the other marquees are filling up quickly too.”

Marquees
Mr Jones said the premium Moet & Chandon Marquee (valued at $250 per head) offered bottomless bubbles to guests and would be catered by Lismore restaurant The Loft.
“The menu includes lobster, crab oysters,” he said. “It’s a beautiful menu never offered here before and we already have over 70 people booked in.
“We also have the Punters Paradise Marquee (valued at $140 per head) with direct access to the betting ring, for those coming for the horse racing. It includes a five hour drinks package and vouchers to food truck vendors on the day.”
Another new marquee is the Furphy Garden Party (valued at $60 per head) which includes a drink on arrival and a lunch voucher to the food trucks.
“We also have the Trackside Table Enclosures (valued at $220 per table) located on the side of the winning post,” Mr Jones said.
Bars
“We have also introduced cashless bars in the public area where you can top up a card with money and tap and pay at the counter. Any money you don’t spend will be refunded on the day or from 9am on Friday, September 20 and Monday, September 23.
“There will also be a limited small number of cash facility bars available, but if you want to skip the lines, you are encouraged to use the cashless payment system.”
Fashions on the Field
“As usual, the Fashions on the Field event will be sure to attract many entries. You can enter online before the event or on the day for one of the many prizes on offer for men’s and women’s dress.
“Even I will be putting more effort into my dressing this year and I encourage everyone to participate,” Mr Jones said.
“Lismore Shopping Square is on board for the event, we have new judges and the final judging will be held in front of the Moet & Chandon Marquee.”
Race day holiday
Thursday, 19 September 2019 has been gazetted as a part-day public holiday for Lismore Race Day that applies to the whole of the Lismore City Council LGA from 12pm to 6pm.
Horse races
The Lismore Cup horse races begin at 11am with five races run throughout the day and the Lismore Cup race runs at 5pm.
Mr Jones said this year, because the total prize money of $75,000 was so high, it was attracting a lot of entries from near and far.
“The prize money is now comparable to the money offered in races in other place and we will be sure to get more entries from horses from the Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Tamworth and Armidale too.”
