Williams the key in Brothers victory

Cooper Williams has led Marist Brothers to victory over the Casino Cavaliers in their LJ Hooker League clash on Saturday.

Chasing 188 for victory, Williams hit an unbeaten 96 in the 7 wicket victory.

The Cavaliers won the toss and elected to bat, and Brothers captain Brendan Mitchell (2/41) struck early with two wickets to have the home side 2/28.

Cavaliers opener Damien Vidler impressed with 94, while wickets fell around him at a consistent basis.

Jeremy Perkins finished with 3/36 and Tom Molloy (1/24), Ryan Lee (1/22) and Andrew Munroe (1/50) all picked up a wicket each to have Casino 8/187 off 40 overs.

In reply, Brothers lost Joe Parsons for 5 before Pat Martin (54) and Willams put on a second wicket partnership of 87 to see them move to 2/102.

Williams faced 94 balls in his innings of 96 not out, which included 9 fours and a six.

The Brethren then lost just one more wicket as they cruised to victory in the 31st over.

The win takes Marist Brothers to 62 points and into sixth spot with one round remaining.

Cooper sits in second spot on the LJ Hooker League batting aggregate with 613 runs for the season at an average of 61.3, an exceptional effort for the 15-year-old.

In other matches, Goonellabah Workers Sports won the toss and elected to bowl against Tweed Banora Colts and it looked to be a good decision.

The Goonellabah bowling attack didn't let the Tweed top order settle, having them 6/50 and then 8/82, before a last wicket stand of 48 pushed the Colts total to 9/148 off the allotted 40 overs.

Michael German took 3/18 to be the best of the Goonellabah bowlers.

In reply, Goonellabah struggled for any type of rhythm, struggling to 6/59 when Tom Standish (46) and Alec Watson (19) put together a 58 run, 7th wicket stand to put GWS back into the match.

Watson fell with the score at 117 and unfortunately Tweed then took the remaining 3 wickets for just 4 runs to have Goonellabah all out for 121 in the 30th over.

The loss drops GWS to third on the ladder with one match remaining against Marist Brothers next week for the Semi Finals.
