Williams makes Australian side after impressive nationals

Marist Brothers Cooper Williams has been named in the Australian U/17 Cricket team after an impressive performance in the national championships in Brisbane.

Williams started the tournament slowly, but an impressive 118 against the Northern Territory in the third match had the selectors watching intently.

Williams finished the nationals with a total of 255 runs at an average of 42.5, the third-highest run scorer for the tournament.

He had scores of 15 (Qld), 29 (SA), 118 (NT), 36 (Tas), 12 (NSW) and 45 against Queensland in the Final.

The NSW Country side made the final after a narrow win against NSW Metro in the semi-final, before rain interrupted the final in Brisbane on Monday.

Unfortunately for NSW Country, they fell short in the run chase, finishing second, but the accolades continued for Williams when he was named in the Australian U/17 team at the conclusion of the event.

Cooper will return to the Marist Brothers LJ Hooker League side after the competition's break with the third-highest batting aggregate with 335 at an average of 55.83, very impressive when you consider Williams is still at school.

In a busy schedule, he also plays Green Shield in Sydney for Gordon, where he has a high score of 91, and recently hit an incredible 202 not out for Woodlawn in the Australian Marist Schools Tournament held here in Lismore in December.

The knock included 17 sixes and 11 fours off just 142 balls against Bunbury Catholic College from Western Australia.

Williams has a huge future ahead of him in the sport, and his selection in the Australian side is to be celebrated, with only a handful of players achieving this from the Far North Coast, most recently Max Bryant (Tweed) and Caelan Maladay (Lennox Head).
