Lismore City Councillors are expressing concern about the continued leaking of confidential information, which is in violation of the council's code of conduct.
As elected representatives, Councillors are often given access to confidential information during a confidential session of a council, committee meetings, workshops or briefing sessions.
Council's code of conduct explicitly states that councillors must not disclose any of the information discussed during these forums.
This is to ensure that sensitive information is not released to the public before it is ready to be made public, and to protect the privacy of individuals and businesses involved.
Councillor Andrew Gordon said he was concerned that information continues to show up in the media.
"The leaking of confidential information is a clear violation of the code and undermines the trust that the community has in us as councillors,” he said.
“It seems to be the same news organisation, the same journalist, and the same politically aligned issues.”
"Councillors have a responsibility to act in the best interest of the community, and that does not include continually leaking information for political gain.”
Lismore City Council General Manager Jon Gibbons told the Lismore App that Council is currently investigating recent leaks to the media.
“The leaking of confidential information is a concern and one that Council takes very seriously,” he said.
“It is the responsibility of all Councillors and staff to ensure confidentiality to promote free and honest discussion among Councillors.”
It remains to be seen what will be found by Council investigating these leaks, and what the ramifications will be for the person leaking confidential information.
