What's happening with Mary G's and The Richmond?

What's happening with Mary G's and The Richmond?

Six months on from the February 28 disaster, there are still some questions being asked about a number of major businesses such as Best and Less, Lincraft and BCF.

Others have done enough of the rebuild to be open so they can start earning income again while continuing the rebuild in other areas of their building.

Mary G's is one such business and with the owners purchasing The Richmond Hotel in April, we can give an update on both of Lismore's iconic pubs.

The Lismore App caught up with Manager Cath Simes to find out how the rebuild is coming along and when the front restaurant and front bar will be back in operation.

The positive news is that Mary G's is up and running seven days a week with food service available in the nightclub area. This was the least affected area from the February 28 megaflood due to its height.

"We're in the process of finishing one of our rooms downstairs," Cath said, "It's got a ceiling and the toilets all have ceilings and lights in them. They just have to get the power to them turned on."

Electricity is still an issue for Mary G's with the building only supplying about 45% of the necessary power. The circuit boards were downstairs and were completely lost in the flood so the building has had to be completely rewired from the back to the front which is why it has taken so long for the power to be restored.

"The kitchen is all done, pokie rooms done, beer gardens done. The room next to the pokie rooms has power in there but it's just not wired yet. There are powerpoints in the bar but no lights and the keg room has lights and power."

The downstairs area of Mary G's is where all the action is happening. While it looks as if there is a long way to go with no floorboards in the hallway to the front door on Woodlark Street the hope is to finish in a couple of months.

"There will be two new bar tops, that is all sorted," Cath said, "And then I've got two ceiling sections to go back in and there is no ceilings in any of the other areas."

Like so many businesses, the bare industrial look will be part of Mary G's too. The restaurant and the hallway will have exposed beams.

"It's trying to flood proof it, as they say, so you don't have to replace ceilings because basically, that's why you can't open. No ceilings, no power."

When the crystal ball came out, Cath said she would like to open the downstairs area in two months, maybe sooner but that is all dependent on supplies. Another problem that is affecting all of Lismore.

"I've got half a floor missing still because it's not here and the flood-resistant panelling for the walls took six weeks to get here for one room and I need that for another one and a half rooms."

"The fact that I'm open, I'm very grateful, "Cath added, "I do miss my front bar but everyone's been so supportive and understanding, it's been amazing."

When asked about The Richmond Hotel, Cath said it was a case of getting Mary G's done first then move on to The Richmond. Will it be a case of bit by bit like Mary G's?

"Probably, I think there's parts of it that can open faster than others. Obviously, the back section will take time but I believe it's fixable with no guarantees at this stage."

"I am very hopeful. It's not Lismore without The Richmond."
