Volunteers: the Heart of Lismore

Volunteers are the backbone of any community, the people who tirelessly and selflessly give their time to help others.

In times of disaster, that volunteer base grows. It grows to a level that fills your heart with pride as all the flooded parts of Lismore kick into the clean-up phase.

At the Southern Cross Uuniversity Evacuation Centre, donations were pouring in, there was hot food and plenty of people ready to offer charging devices, towels for a shower and medical support, a secure animal crate and all sorts of incredibly supportive services to support the people being choppered in from their heavily isolated properties.

Today we visited the GSAC Evacuation Centre where we spoke to several volunteers, all of whom had lost their homes and been impacted as well.

One volunteer shared how they were staying in the centre themselves, had lost everything, and yet they were "keeping busy by helping out with supporting others who are in a similar boat. The Centre was getting full.

Some volunteers have made a 1,626km trip from Melbourne to help out. Four friends from the Melbourne Sikh Community arrived in Lismore late this afternoon to help their friend Sony Singh, owner of Masala Fusion Indian Restaurant and Indian & Continental Grocery Grocery store on Keen Street and to cook for the estimated thousand people staying in our evacuation centres.

The drive was in two stages due to access roads being closed, so they stopped at Woolgoolga Sikh Temple, where they cooked food which they delivered to Casino when Summerland Way opened this afternoon. The food was then distributed via choppers to Lismore for those who are now homeless.

"They cooked food in Casino at Federal College on Rose St," Sony said, "Then it was delivered by Police escort, along with the men, to Southern Cross University."

SCU have given permission for the men to access their commercial kitchen to continue to cook and feed people in the centres as well as volunteers helping home and business owners with the clean-up .

Lismore Lantern Parade legend Jyllie Jackson is looking for volunteers tomorrow to help go through the much loved lanterns at the premises at 289 Keent Street.

"I realise there is a lot of people worse off than me," Jyllie said, "If I can get a few people to help tomorrow morning that would be wonderful". You can just tun up at Lighten Up Inc, 289 Keen St or call Jyllie on 0412 732 102.

We have put her in touch with Van from Samoa, who has a group of Samoans he is coordinating who are willing and very able to help with clean up, moving of furniture and heavy items and supporting overall. They put a post up making this offer for to the whole community and can be contacted via this number also: 0486 023 041.

During our darkest hour, Jyllie has offered the Lismore people hope, saying that no matter what, the Lismore Lantern Parade will go on this year on June 25.
