The 2020 Callan McMillan Shield is heading to Alstonville, after the Villa FC Women defeated Lismore Thistles at Crawford Park this afternoon.

After earlier defeats to Villa FC 1-0 and then 2-0 on Friday night in the regular season, Thistles were out for revenge and had an eye on the Shield.

The first half started out fairly even, with both sides moving the ball and testing the opposition defence.

As the first half continued, Villa began to gain a slight territorial advantage, with a number of long range shots on goal from Jade Bates and two corners that were well defended by the Thistles backs.

The best opportunity for Villa came 33 minutes into the match with a strong cross that just fell out of reach of the Alstonville strikers.

A quick counter attack after a Thistles shot on goal saw Alstonville force repeat corners, the second resulting in a goal to Caty Walker with just one minute left in the first half.

This allowed the home team to head to the break up 1-0.

The second half started poorly for Thistles who came into the match with only one reserve.

Midfielder, Abbi Watson was brought from the field with a knee injury only minutes into the second stanza, which left the Lismore side with the bare eleven.

Fifteen minutes in, Villa's Emilie Hughes drew a penalty in the box, which was taken by Jade Bates, unfortunately it sailed over the crossbar to give Thistles hope.

The next opportunity came to Thistles, with young striker Sammy Hughes hitting the crossbar over an outstretched keeper Abbi Brown, from a long-range free kick.

It was then Thistles goalkeeper Arky Ryall turn to impress, with saves from a one on one with Villa's Emma Eichorn and an Emilie Hughes shot.

A Villa corner from Luka Newman hit the target, with a beautiful header on the near post from Caty Walker hitting the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Just 10 minutes later, Caty Walker netted her third goal of the afternoon with a carbon copy header from an Emma Eichorn corner to put the Callan McMillan Shield out of reach for the Thistles side.

Villa were then able to cement the win with one minute to go when Eichorn was able to run on to a lovely through ball and hit the top right corner for a 4-0 victory.

Villa had a number of standouts, with three goal hero Caty Walker heading the list. Abbi McInnes, Eichorn, Hughes and Jade Bates also had strong games.

The Alstonville Women currently lead the Premier League ladder from Lennox Head and Byron Bay.
