Un-named pop up shop brings unusual items into the CBD Marcus Herron in the new shop.

From the Turkish rugs on the floor at the entrance, to the Asian style wooden boxes, military jacket, clothes and comics – there is something different and unusual in every corner of a new shop, just opened on Magellan Street.

Still un-named, the pop-up shop is the collective brainchild of Marcus Herron, Brenda Crosby and their friend Ros. It is filled with items gathered over the years by the three collectors who want to make the most out of the reasonable rent offered for a temporary shop in the Lismore CBD.

Marcus is responsible for the shop’s antiques, collectables and curiosities, while Brenda and Ros have vintage and interesting items of clothing.

“I have some weird and wonderful stuff,” Marcus said. “There’s a real Catholic Bishop’s robe here which apparently the clergy who wore it were supposed to get buried in it."

In the case of this robe however, it wasn’t the case. Now, it stands for sale.

Marcus said he has a liking for Asian style furnishings – but his collection extends far and wide, including baroque, eclectic, antique and vintage furniture and curiosities.

“My favourite item in the shop is a wooden Chinese screen,” he said. “It’s a divider screen for a moveable space - a temporary wall – it’s beautiful.”

In the shop, there are wooden tables, chairs, a bronze-worked Korean tea cabinet, Javanese box and an old European wooden box from the 1880s.

Next to this is a Hong Kong table with dragon markings and a European corner cupboard with a glass window front.

Every day, new items will be brought into the shop and Marcus will be bringing more Turkish rugs very soon.

“A lot of my stuff has been sitting in my garage and the stuff in the shop is too big to take to the markets,” Marcus said.

“I’m always buying things and started collecting in the early 1980s when the Sydney Council throw out nights started.

“We used to sit on top of a friend’s car with a flash light and go out and find stuff. Then I’d go to Glebe or Balmain markets and sell it.”

Marcus has opened several shops over the years – in Newtown, Bangalow and Mullumbimby, then he moved up to the North Coast in 1997 and has been selling things ever since. He has also been a regular stall holder at Lismore Car Boot and Channon Craft market – along with his fellow shop opener, Brenda.

Brenda has been selling her clothes around the area for years and also has a shop in Mullumbimby.

Marcus said right now was a great time for the three collectors to collaborate and open a small shop together.

“In the Covid downturn, people have money at the moment because of Jobkeeper and Jobseeker,” Marcus said. “For people who are used to being fairly poor, now it means a steady income. When you do the markets, life is up and down.”

Located next to Red Inc, the shop will be open Monday to Friday, 10am until 4pm and the three co-owners will take turns looking after the shop.

So, will it eventually have a name?

“We are thinking of a having a shop sign and it will probably say vintage, retro goods,” Marcus said.

Being a pop-up shop, it could also pop-down again at any time, so pop in and say hi.
