Two lots of budgets under discussion at tonight's Council meeting

Tonight's extraordinary Lismore City Council meeting promises to be a long drawn out affair with not one, but two sets of budget numbers to discuss and vote on.

The first being the March 2020 Budget Quarterly Review which was postponed from last weeks ordinary meeting so councillors had sufficient time to read and analyse what has happened in the pre-coronavirus period and the second the final adoption of the Operational Plan for the 2020/21 budget following a month on public display through the council's 'Your Say' website.

According to the business papers for tonight's meeting, council had 212 public submissions commenting on the Draft Operational Plan.

The top three items of concern from the people that commented were:

  1. The closure of the Brewster Street recycling facility plus the cancellation of tip vouchers.
  2. The proposed budget cuts to The Quad and facilities
  3. The withholding of the NORPA management fee.

The Lismore City Council is in a precarious financial position and needs to cut services substantially in order to be in a more positive position heading into the 2021/22 financial year.

With the proposed cost reduction in the above areas plus others like tourism there are bound to be some very unhappy ratepayers after tonight's meeting.
