2023 was a year that Tuntable Creek Public School should have been celebrating a major milestone....100 years of education.
Instead, staff and students are unsure whether they will remain open to celebrate anything in the future as the school's position hangs in the balance.
Last year's February 28 megaflood wiped out Tuntable Creek Road which meant the primary school was inaccessible to some families who had children enrolled.
The road was so badly damaged it was touch and go whether there was an engineering solution to make it operational, however, just before December 2022 a solution was agreed and the road only reopened with one lane operational to local traffic recently.
With Tuntable Creek Public School being unreachable for so long, a lot of families had to find alternative schools for their child's/children education to continue.
A quick call to Tuntable Creek Public School was met with a reluctance to talk about anything related to the school, even its history with advice to call the NSW Department of Education.
A spokesperson for NSW Education could not shine any light on the school's future. The Lismore App received the following statement:
“A decision on Tuntable Creek Public School’s future has not been made.
“We have started consultation with the wider school community into the future of educational provision at the school.
“The school will keep the community informed as we move forward.”
With the school reluctant to talk, this may not be the case as the decision will ultimately be made by the new government following Saturday's NSW State Election result.
NSW Education did confirm that there are currently three (3) students enrolled at Tuntable Creek Public School.
Tuntable Creek Public School opened in 1923, will it be closing in 2023?
