The Tuntable Creek Public School is celebrating a milestone this Saturday, 100 years of education.
It is a bittersweet celebration as the school is in limbo after a tumultuous last eighteen months where the big flood caused landslides that cut off transport routes for parents to get kids to school for twelve months.
That led to students being re-zoned to The Channon Public School and in 2023, Tuntable Creek PS had three registered students and is deemed 'non-operational', which means it is not officially closed down but there is the opportunity for it to reopen should the need arise.
In the meantime, the Department of Education has allowed Tuntable Creek PS to open the school this Saturday, September 30 to celebrate its centenary with staff and former staff and students.
The school will have some of its archives on display in the over 100-year-old school-house. A limited edition 100-year booklet will be available, as well as a photo book, with the option to print to order if they run-out. You are asked to bring cash for any purchases.
There will be a free sausage sizzle and a coffee van.
Join our Facebook group "Friends of Tuntable Creek Primary School", in the lead-up to the Centenary to share stories or photos of your memories at Tuntable Creek PS. You are also encouraged to bring your memories to share on the day.
Tuntable Creek Public School has been on its current site for 100 years. Previously the school was located closer to The Channon village, however the schoolhouse was moved in 1923 to a site 4 kms further up Tuntable Creek so that there was less chance of students from up the valley being flooded-out from bridges across Tuntable Creek. According to Tuntable Creek PS, life-long Tuntable Creek resident Dulcie Brown remembers her father talking about the move, using bullocks. The schoolhouse was moved during wet conditions.
Dulcie will be present at the centenary and is excited to talk about the history of the school to attendees.
The 100 year celebrations of Tuntable Creek Public School will take place this Saturday (September 30) between 10am and 2pm.
