The final long weekend for four months is upon us, and the Bureau of Meteorology are giving it the thumbs up weatherwise. That sort of forecast, especially for a Saturday, has been a rare experience in recent weeks.
After some cold starts to the days, we should experience mostly sunny weather with maximums of 20-21 degrees.
It is a quiet weekend, event-wise, as we head towards two major Lismore events in the coming weeks that are well attended:
For the Kings Birthday Long Weekend, we have double demerit points and police out in force checking speed, seatbelts, drink/drug driving and mobile phone usage until Midnight Monday.
The Lismore Farmers Markets swing open the gates at 7:30 tomorrow morning at the showground.
The Tides will entertain you while you shop for fresh fruit and vegetables and enjoy a hot coffee and breakfast. The Lismore Scout Group will be there selling raffle tickets, with the prize being a trailer load of cut hardwood firewood. The annual Lismore Poultry Show will be happening in the pavillion behind the market area.
Heritage Park is always a good site to visit with the kids. The miniature railway will be operating from 10:30am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday and 10am to 2pm on Monday.
On Sunday, why not head up to the hills for the day and shop at The Channon Markets at Coronation Park (The Channon Road) between 9am and 3pm. There will be over 200 stalls selling a range of great local products from condiments and pickles to handmade goods.
Sport usually takes a break over any long weekend. This is the case for Football Far North Coast, with no games scheduled. However, the NRRRL will be playing catchup games due to the wet start to the season. The Rams do not have to take the field, but Northern United will be taking on Cudgen at Crozier Field tomorrow (Saturday) with the Under 18s at midday. The Dirrawongs will be confident after an impressive 30-12 victory at Ballina last weekend/
If you need to fill your petrol tanks over the long weekend, Ballina is still the cheapest place to buy fuel, although Casino has seen around a 10-cent-a-litre drop in the last week. Lismore is the most expensive town to buy fuel, apart from diesel where it is the cheapest.
Here are the latest prices in each town:
The new Lismore Podcast continues on Sunday, with Mayor Steve Krieg joining me in Talking Lismore.
Mayor Krieg talks about the Richmond River High School site off Dunoon Road, North Lismore, compulsory acquisitions, council budget and council vision.
Look out for our Podcast button on the front page or on the right-hand side of the website menu. There you will find all five episodes of our series on Solar Energy.
Have a great long weekend!
