The Bureau of Meteorology says that severe thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and this evening for Lismore and the Northern Rivers, they may also be some supercell thunderstorms.
Today's thunderstorms are being generated by an upper trough and a surface trough as it moves east across NSW.
Jonathon How, a Meteorologist with The Bureau, said the severe thunderstorm possible area is widespread.
"It extends all the way from the coast inland to the Darling Downs and Maranoa, south of Northern Tablelands, and across to the northeast coast of New South Wales."
The interest for Lismore and the Northern Rivers is the development of supercell thunderstorms.
"But it's this red area where we could see severe thunderstorms become more likely, and this area includes Brisbane, the Sunshine and Gold Coast across to Toowoomba, Lismore and areas inland from Ballina."
"In addition, through this red area, through here, we could see isolated, very dangerous thunderstorms. And it's these supercell thunderstorms which could deliver destructive winds, giant hail with a diameter greater than five centimetres, as well as intense rainfall leading to flash flooding."
The Lismore App will push any warnings from the Bureau once they are released, and you can stay up to date with the Bureau of Meteorology through the Lismore App's Weather & Travel button, which includes Weather and Weather Radar.
