The Bureau of Meteorology has released two warnings for The Northern Rivers, the warnings relate to coastal areas and will affect Byon Bay, Ballina, Lennox Head and Evans Head. Rock fishing, surfing and swimming will be hazardous right across the weekend.
For Lismore, we will experience strong winds and 15-25mm of rainfall today. The BOM is forecasting this to ease on Saturday (4-6mm) then a mostly sunny Sunday as temperatures rise into the 20's once again as the low moves towards New Zealand.
While Lismore's issue is going to be sodden ground once more after the rain tops up our water table, those going to Splendour in the Grass in Byron look likely to be in a mud pit so gumboots and some seriously heavy-duty wet weather gear is the order of the day.
A comment from one festival goer said, "Myself, my partner and my brother had our tent collapse from the terrible weather, we have resorted to sleeping the boot/back seat of the car. This whole time has been a miserable experience. (The tent is absolutely ruined and not fixable whatsoever) and we can't even leave if we wanted to."
BOM Severe Weather Warnings:
Weather Situation: A developing East Coast Low off the south coast of Queensland is expected to gradually move southwards while deepening during Friday.
The East Coast Low will interact with a ridge to the south to produce increasing winds and waves along the northern coastline. The low will begin to move away to the southeast on Saturday.
VERY HEAVY SURF is forecast along the coastline north of Wooli to Tweed Heads from Friday evening, gradually easing during Saturday afternoon, which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion.
Significant wave heights exceeding 5 metres from an east to southeasterly direction are expected.
Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf-exposed areas.
A separate Hazardous Surf Warning is also current.
Locations that may be affected include Tweed Heads, Byron Bay, Ballina, Brunswick Heads, Evans Head and Yamba.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
You can keep up to date with the BOM's weather forecast through the Lismore App Weather.
