Transport for NSW has released a statement saying that Terania Street will likely reopen in mid-November if weather and site conditions allow.
Temporary repair work will begin next Monday, October 16 after little activity has been seen at the site recently.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said, "Terania Street, Lismore was closed to all traffic at the non-operational rail over road bridge between Tweed and Peate streets from 7pm on Friday 22 September.
"Recent inspections have identified significant damage to the bridge sustained from over-height vehicles.
"Further investigation is required to determine necessary repairs to the bridge and to ensure the road can be safely reopened to motorists.
"Road users are advised Terania Street will remain closed to all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists until further investigation and repair work can be carried out.
"Work to carry out temporary repairs is scheduled to start in the week commencing Monday 16 October and is expected to be complete by mid-November, weather and site conditions permitting.
"Transport for NSW is currently investigating the traffic design for reopening. A minimum single lane traffic flow will be in place and Transport is also reviewing the feasibility of reopening to two lanes of traffic, subject to compliance with design and safety standards.
"Detour routes will be in place while investigations and repair work are carried out.
"These detours will be communicated to motorists using detour signs and Variable Message Signs (VMS), placed on the detour route and approaches to Terania Street.
"Transport for NSW assures motorists, residents and other stakeholders that we will work hard to ensure the road is reopened as soon as possible."
There is no indication if the bridge will eventually be removed, something Lismore City Council supports following last night's council meeting along with four other bridges.
Meanwhile, a detour for all heavy and light vehicles is available via Wilson Street, Elliott Road and Ballina Road.
Light vehicles can then access Bridge and Terania Streets via Dawson and Woodlark Streets, which are not suitable for heavy vehicles. Motorists should allow up to 10 minutes extra travel time.
A detour for pedestrians is available from Terania Street via Pine, Crane and Tweed Streets.
The community will also be kept up to date on the results of investigations being carried out on four other rail overpass bridges in this area.
