Teaching a learner driver? Attend a free workshop.

Transport NSW is inviting the community to attend a free “Helping Learner Drivers Become Safe Drivers” workshop.

Even though young drivers aged under 26 years make up only about 14% of all licence holders, the crashes they are involved in make up almost a quarter of annual road fatalities.

Teaching a learner how to drive a car and navigate traffic is a challenging task and can be stressful. Many anecdotes are popping up locally of people having near accidents with L plate drivers and, conversely, of L plate drivers experiencing impatience and aggressive behaviour on our roads that is difficult to navigate safely.

The workshop aims to help parents and other supervisors of learner drivers to be confident and effective teachers, arming them with some excellent knowledge and strategies to teach learner drivers to be safe and responsible road users.

Topics will include information about licensing conditions for L & P platers, tips for using the learner driver log book, how to deal with difficulties that may arise during driving practice and education around the value of providing constructive feedback.

One local mum, Lauren Hotko, told the Lismore App, “Before my daughter got her L's I was quite nervous knowing that I would be the one teaching her how to drive."

"I even enquired about doing a driving lesson to get some info and insight into how to go about teaching her. But there wasn't anything that felt like the right fit."

"It would be great to see something like this available - anything to help better educate our younger drivers to keep them safe on the roads.”

The next free workshop in Lismore will be held at Lismore PCYC (37 Orion Street) this Monday the 6th of November at 5pm. For all enquiries, you can contact Nerida on 0409 357 139.
