Summer Sunday Racing comes to Lismore

Summer Sunday racing returns to the Lismore Turf Club this weekend.

The early January meeting always draws a strong holiday crowd, many of whom head back to work on Monday after a brief Christmas/New Year break.

The race meeting is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and thoroughbreds with friends and family on a casual day at the Lismore track.

The 7-race card has an impressive 84 acceptors, with the first race set to jump at 1:35pm.

The main race of the day will be the Viva Racing Benchmark 66 Handicap over 1220m, with a strong field of 12 runners, headlined by Kingdom Undersiege, the $2.40 favourite.

Popular Murwillumbah trainer Matt Dunn will saddle up runners in five of the seven races, with Ballina trainer Stephen Lee also having a big showing with runners in six of the races across the day.

Leading jockey Ben Looker (5 rides), apprentice Bella Youngberry (5) and Dylan Turner (6) head the list of jockeys with a big book of rides.

The meeting is the first event since the successful Westpac Rescue Helicopter Christmas Cup Race Day, held on Friday, 19 December, which drew a large crowd and raised over $10,000 for the charity.

The day will wrap up around 5:30pm, with the Pak Vending Class 1 Handicap set to jump at 5:20pm.

The next meeting for the club will be a mid-week event on Tuesday, 10 February, followed by two Saturday meetings on 11 April and 16 May.
