If you were thinking of driving along the M1 over the next two nights, you need to be aware that Transport for NSW will be closing the St Helena Tunnel for two nights, weather permitting, for maintenance.

To reduce the impact on motorists, the work will be carried out at night. The tunnel will be closed to all traffic from 7pm to 5am each night from Monday, 24 to Wednesday, 26 November, reopening at 5am Thursday, 27 November, weather permitting.

Northbound traffic will be diverted onto Hinterland Way at Byron Bay Road (Bangalow exit), rejoining the motorway at Ewingsdale. Southbound traffic will be diverted onto Hinterland Way at Ewingsdale Road (Byron Bay exit), rejoining the motorway at Bangalow.

The diversions are suitable for all vehicles, and motorists are advised to allow up to five minutes of additional travel time, drive to the conditions and follow the direction of signs and traffic control.

Routine maintenance of the St Helena Tunnel is carried out every three months and involves a range of measures, such as inspecting the various operating and safety systems.
