Souths win FFNC Premier Division Grand Final

South Lismore Celtic FC have won Football Far North Coast's Premier Division Grand Final for the first time in 26 years.

In 1993 Brett Towner scored twice for Souths to win their first Grand Final and on 21 September 2019 it was two goals from teenage midfielder Noah Coleman that got Souths home before a big crowd at Crozier Oval. This time it was after 90 minutes.

Captain Paddy Kable and the players lift the Premier Division Premiership trophy to Souths' loyal fans at Crozier Oval.

"It is a surreal feeling," coach Cameron Hyde said.

"Never in our wildest dreams when we got promoted did we envisage we would win the Premier Division Grand Final in two years. It is incredible, it really is.

"This is an incredible bunch of boys and they deserve everything. It was an almighty effort from our boys."

Coleman scored twice in the second half after a very intense first half in which Byron Bay dominated. Byron Bay spurned two golden chances to score and were on top of Souths who had the advantage of the wind.

Coleman's first came with 15 minutes to go and then he quickly followed up with a second, a beauty from a free kick, that sent the Souths supporters wild.

Byron Bay, who had the past two Grand Finals, got one back with a penalty but it as too late and Souths held on for a famous victory.

"We were expecting Byron to come strong from the start and they knew they had to try and beat us in the first 30 minutes as we we would run over them in the second half. We had to withstand that pressure and we did and gave us every chance in ther second half."

Hyde said after the second goal they knew Byron would throw men forward, so Souths changed their system to try and counteract it.

"It was a silly penalty to give away and it was backs to the wall for the final minutes. It was a mighty effort and don't forget most of the boys had never played in a Grand Final before.

It is a tremendous achievement for South Lismore Celtic FC as this is the second season the club has been back in the Premier Division after a 15 year gap.

Souths coach Cameron Hyde took over in the First Division in 2017. He has brought the side back into the Premier Division, led the side to the preliminary finals last season and this season has taken his side to the Grand Final and become Premiers.

Souths were captained by Paddy Kable, Football Far North Coast's Player of the Year, who lifted up the trophy.

Kable was full of praise for his midfield colleague Coleman, who scored both goals.

"He was playing in Reserve Grade last season and he had a great game. The way he lifted that shot over the wall and down was fantastic," said Kable.

Byron Bay, who were Minor Premiers, were unable to send their beloved coach Damon Bell out on a winning note.
