Nick Shailes and the Aussie Steelers have won their second World Cup in New Zealand on Sunday.
Shailes was one of the stars in the 5-2 victory with a first innings double before a home run in the top of the sixth.
The Steelers showed determination and spirit to reverse the result after an opening round 6-0 loss to the Canadians.
Australia stormed out of the gates in the first inning, hitting two doubles in their first three at-bats (including Shailes) to put runners on second and third.
Come the end of the game the Steelers had restricted Canada to four hits and two runs, their equal lowest game result for the tournament.
Australia scored five runs off the back of eight hits and the two Canadian errors.
In the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Vice-captain and third-baseman Shailes calmly threw to first base and the final out for a famous victory for Australia.
Veteran Nick Shailes, a key figure in the 2009 World Championship winning team, finished the tournament with a team-high batting average of .421. His sixth-inning home run was the feather in the cap of a fine World Cup.
Shailes was rewarded for his brilliant tournament after being named in the the All-World Team.
A product of FNC Softball, Shailes still has strong links to local softball.
The FNC Softball competition was unfortunately washed out this weekend but will resume next Saturday.
