The SCU Gold Rats have had the perfect start to their resurrection in FNC Rugby Union.

The Gold Rats hosted the Kyogle Cockies at Maurie Ryan Oval (Southern Cross University) in the first match the club has played since 2020.

The trial match between the two clubs has a long tradition in the preseason, with the match alternating venues between the clubs since the late 1990's.

In encouraging signs for the Rats, a good crowd was on hand to see the home side run out 39-5 winners in humid conditions.

The team ran in an impressive six tries to one in the victory, which saw a host of new players make their debuts for the club.

They were joined by club stalwarts, veteran Peter Murphy, Kirk Taylor-Brown, Pat Kelly, Pat Wilton and Mitch Bird.

The club will join the Far North Coast competition at the commencement of the 2023 season which has it's traditional start after the Easter break.
