The controversial Santin Quarry leads a very full Lismore City Council agenda for tonight's final Council meeting of 2020.
Controversial, as it is a case where some neighbouring properties oppose the quarries life extension due to alleged operational compliance issues, silica dust and noise complaints versus a long term viable business that employs 5 full time and 2 part-time workers plus additional casual jobs.
Owner Mick Santin denies the alleged compliance issues saying that some neighbouring property owners are making up stories to suit their own agendas.
During its October meeting councillors deferred making a decision about extending the quarries life because they wanted more detailed information.
Outside legal advice plus environmental and public health advice has been sourced with council staff recommending for a third time that the extension be granted. Tonights business papers have mentioned two other options of a 5 year extension, a 10 year extension or the full 16 year extension as per the application to the life of the quarry.
It is up to our nine councillors to make a decision on whether to approve the Santin Quarry or close it down.
There are two cases of land subdivision on the agenda tonight with one at Caniaba and the other at Chilcotts Grass.
The North Lismore Plateau gets a mention with proposed changes to Staging of Development and Design of Sewerage and Water Infrastructure.
Lismore City Council has received complains from the NSW Office of Local Government (OLG) about competitive neutrality issues surrounding GSAC's gym and swim school. If council has businesses that compete with privately owned businesses then it must apply the same business principles including tax rates that the private business would. An independent review of those businesses may be needed to respond to the OLG by mid-January, 2021.
The Lismore App will have a full wrap of tonight's council meeting or you can view it live from 6pm via the council website .
