Rainbow Roos: The Heart of Inclusive Soccer in the Northern Rivers

What started out as a single soccer session just over a year ago has blossomed into one of the Northern Rivers' most loved children's programs.

Rainbow Roos now runs over 20 sessions each week across the region, with a growing team, loyal families and a powerful mission: to make soccer fun, inclusive, and accessible for everybody.

Led by founder Brad Ambridge, Rainbow Roos welcomes children of all ages and abilities - from energetic toddlers to teens with serious footwork. "We're here to help kids fall in love with sport," says Brad. "And more importantly, to help families feel supported, seen and connected."

To meet growing demand, Rainbow Roos has recently expanded into a team of five passionate coaches. Joining Brad are Hayley, Ryan, Ellie and Luka, each bringing their own spark, experience and energy to the pitch.

Coach Hayley has a passion for child care and support, with a real talent for helping toddlers come out of their shells. "Sometimes I'm not sure who's having more fun - the kids or me!"

Coach Ryan shares his incredible skills that has seen him represent Australia, combined with a natural ability to connect with kids of all ages. "There's nothing better than watching confidence grow over the course of a term."

Coach Ellie is a creative powerhouse, known for turning the simplest drill into a game filled with laughter. "The goal is fun first," she says, "because if they're laughing, they're learning."

Coach Luka brings a wealth of experience and a calm, focused energy that shines in both group and one-on-one sessions. "Every child deserves to feel proud of themselves. That's what we work towards every session."

With sessions in Lismore, Goonellabah, Ballina and Casino, it's no exaggeration to say that Rainbow Roos has the whole family, and region, covered:

BabyRoos (Ages 2–4)

These giggle-filled sessions are the perfect introduction to movement and ball skills. BabyRoos combines simple coordination games, fun races and group activities in a pressure-free environment. And the best part? A full 10-week term is now just $60, thanks to generous support from the Inger Rice Foundation.

"It's amazing seeing the confidence grow week by week," says Hayley. "We have shy little ones hiding behind their parents on day one - by week three, they're leading the conga line!"

MiniRoos (Ages 5–10)

MiniRoos is where the fun really takes off! These sessions mix skills, games and challenges in a friendly, non-competitive way. Children build their technique, coordination and teamwork - all while having a blast. Thanks to a three-year funding partnership with the Wolper Jewish Foundation, a 10-week term is now just $95.

"We keep things fresh and fun," says Ellie. "There's nothing better than seeing kids cheer each other on, even if they've just met that day."

BigRoos (Ages 11–16) & Adults Social

Designed for older children, teens and adults, these sessions are more advanced but still welcoming and inclusive. Whether trying soccer for the first time or already training hard, they are tailored to meet them where they're at.

Dates for these programs will be announced soon.

School Holiday Programs

This winter break, Rainbow Roos is once again running action-packed holiday sessions across the region, with something for everyone.

The highlight is a dedicated two-day program in Lismore for kids aged 5–16, featuring games, skills, tactics, goals and prizes.

Thanks to continued support from the Wolper Jewish Foundation, it's very cheap!

"Our holiday programs are always a huge hit," says Brad. "Parents love them too - they get a bit of breathing space while knowing their kids are safe, active and smiling."

Rainbow Roos is a registered not-for-profit organisation with all funds being redistributed amongst the community in the form of subsidised sessions, local projects and continued growth. Running all year round - there's no off-season - Rainbow Roos has something for everybody. Families can also access:

  • Private coaching for advanced players
  • One-on-one NDIS sessions to support specific developmental goals
  • School incursions & preschool visits
  • Birthday parties
  • Community events

Brad sums it up perfectly, "We are unapologetically different - we deliberately don't play competitive games and are therefore here for everybody. Whether the idea of joining a team is just too overwhelming for your child or getting to games at the weekend doesn't fit into a realistic family schedule, Rainbow Roos fills that void to ensure nobody misses out."

"Ultimately, we dream of a world where organisations like ours don't need to exist. This is more than just soccer - it's about belonging, confidence and community. We're proud to be part of something truly special and unique here in the Northern Rivers."
